‘Teams will present their solutions to one long-term problem that they have been ‘working on all year. That will be presented as a performance with an &-minute time limit for the judges. Teams will also solve a spontaneous problem given to them at the tournament. ‘Their scores from the long-term solution and the spontaneous solution are combined in order to determine their placement at the tournament, ‘ What volunteers are needed? Each team should ideally have a coach, an assistant coach, a logistics coordinator (who helps coordinate things such as snacks, carpooling, etc.), and they will also need 2 volunteer judges (a long-term judge and a spontaneous judge) to volunteer at the toumaments and Fun Day and 2 volunteers at-large for tournaments and Fun Day. The judges must attend required training. Coaches’ training is provided and recommended but optional. Volunteer judges must be 18 years or older and have clearances. Coaches must have clearances on fle with the school. What is the cost to participate? Each initial membership per school costs $135. Each subsequent membership costs an additional $100. Each tournament registration costs $100. Each Fun Day registration (pier team) costs $10. Each team has a cost limit for materials that is usually around $145. Teams do not always spend that much on materials since much of the materials are elther donated or recycled, reused materials. Home Depot donated materials for HMS's team last year. The average cost per student has been somewhere between '$36-60 per student, depending on how many are on the team and how many events the {eam participates in. Should students advance to the state toumament and/or world finals, they would have to pay for travel costs to attend the tournaments and the tournament registration fees. Teams may opt to do a fundraiser to assist in those efforts, or find a PTO or local business interested in sponsoring a team. How can | help my child with their team's solution? ‘Odyssey of the Mind has strict rules against outside interference. The team is solving a problem that is absolutely their own and parents, siblings, friends, who are not on the team must NOT put forth their original ideas for a solution to a team member. What parents can do is if a team member asks to find out more about something, parents can help provide them with appropriate resources to research their solution and they may help procure REQUESTED materials. Parents may not suggest materials to be used. Parents may NOT build, sew, use power tools, do electrical work, etc. in order to help teams create their solution. All hands-on work and original ideas must be done by the team members themselves. Where can I find out more? yaww.odysseyofthemind.com is the international website for the organization. www.wpaodyssey.org is the website for PA.
