APRIL 2ND 11 AM- 1PM
AT THE YWCA
605 N 6th St, Lafayette IN
Tippecanoe Child Abuse Prevention Council (TCAP) will host “Family Fun
Fest” April 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lafayette YWCA in honor of
National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
This annual event brings fun games and crafts for the entire family as
well as insightful information for parents. Jen Hall, local board member
of TCAP says, “We want the event to be fun and enjoyable for everyone
but we also want to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect.”Every year the event has a different theme. This year, “we are happy to
confirm that our theme for this year is ‘be a superhero.” The theme
invites children to dress up as their favorite superhero characters. Not
only that, but there will also be many superheroes in attendance.
Spiderman, Batman, Captain America and two of the My Little Pony
characters are confirmed in attendance. These special guests will
interact with the children, take photographs with the guests and talk
about their superhero activities during the event.
Aside from the superheroes in attendance, there will be arts and crafts.
“The kids will be able to make their own superhero masks” says Hall
about the highly anticipated craft. Another option is to participate in a
coloring contest.
The prompt of the coloring contest is “who is your favorite superhero?”
The kids will compete to have the best coloring drawing of their favorite
superhero character. Moreover, the fun is not only for the children.
TCAP will have a variety of demonstrations and workshops for parents
to gain invaluable information about parenting. “Parenting is hard. I
should know because I have three kids,” says Hall. For this reason, TCAP
wants to make sure parents get useful tips and advice.
Other topics include safety. Particularly, the Red Cross will teach a
workshop on setting up smoke detectors. The workshop is especially
important to make sure parents know how to maintain their smoke
detectors in good working conditions through out the entire year.TCAP is also very excited to bring a new workshop to the event this year
on the topic of safe sleeping. The topic came to the attention of the
organization after alarming statistics of co-sleeping fatalities emerged.
Co-sleeping is a major issue that affects Tippecanoe community and
which TCAP will finally be able to address at the event. Hall says, “In the
past year there have been six deaths as a result of co-sleeping. People
do not know that it is dangerous.”
To educate the community about the dangers of co-sleeping, TCAP is
sending a member to receive training on safe sleeping habits. With this
new knowledge under their belt, the first class about safe sleeping will
occur.
Superheroes, masks, a coloring contest and invaluable information for
parents are the highlights of “Family Fun Fest.” Do not miss the chance
of an exceptional family afternoon. Let us hope the super villains don't
show up in search of their superhero friends.
