Questions and Information (includes observational questions, interpretative questions, and

selected information):
Q1. What makes this performance stand out to you? ( Consider setting, body language,
lyricism etc)
Q2. What is the impact of having two different voices? Did you like that or did you not?
Could you think of a time in your life when you could have used a second voice to stand
with you?
Q3. Is there a message of justice in this piece and what is your interpretation of that?
Information
Spoken word poetry is often implemented in order to convey a message that must be
said, but it cannot simply read , it must be performed in a way that calls viewers into
action and reflection.
Class Poem: Using Dr. Kings speech We Shall Overcome (https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=130J-FdZDtY), instruct class to come together on an issue in our world that we
would like to address and change. Using Dr. Kings repition of we shall, have class create
a poem that builds on their perception of chosen issue and how they will change it.
Instruct class to dream and be creative, to not overthink it but to allow their interpretation
from their own lives to be used as way to reflect on how to combat the issue at hand.

Notes for Investigation (may include information students might ask for, follow-up questions,
or tips from troubleshooting section of website):
Have students consider what images or happenings they would like to see in their
own communities
consider how people are already fighting for equality,
perhaps have them consider a world without said issue and
what that would look like, what would it smell like, taste like and feel like?
