A slice of life

He walked down the road in the afternoon. He was laughing and having
a conversation with an invisible person. The children whispered that he was
coming their way. With open shutters they were watching him go away.
The strange person was called Nieves, a mysterious plum man. His
skin was rough and tanned. When his spoke his white teeth gleamed through
red lips. As in most places there were a lot of funny characters in our town.
The cheerful chubby madman who was nearly bald and drove an imaginary
car down the road, the strange twins, pale and skinny, in their white dresses.
They were staying on their verandah, and were watching the other kids
playing through their sad dark eyes. Nieves was different. He was new in our
town and none of them knew where he had come from or where he lived
now. Some people said that he was mad.
One evening, when I was walking down the road, I heard heavy steps
behind me. I looked round to see who was behind me and I saw Nieves
smiling at me. I smiled back. Then I started to run home as fast as I could.
When I arrived home I saw that Nieves followed me home. I slammed the
door shut and my mother came rushing to see what was happening. My
mother then opened the door and introduced Mr Nieves Luna who was
working with my dad. Soon after, Nieves became a part of the family. A lot of
people said to my mom that they were mad because they let me play with
Nieves. But they were wrong. Nieves was a friendly man and he was good
with the children. He never lost habit of talking to imaginary listeners but in
time he was accepted by the people in our town.
