REFLECTION:

Happy events can trigger a heart condition known as takotsubo syndrome,

according to new research. Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is known as 'broken heart
syndrome.' Now, for the first time, researchers have systematically analyzed data from
the largest group of patients diagnosed with TTS worldwide, and found that some
patients have developed the condition after a happy or joyful event; they have named it
'happy heart syndrome.'
I am alarmed because it is new to our society. After reading the article, I realized
that sometimes happiness can harm us and can cause danger on us.
Over-excitement or too much happiness on something can cause death. We
have to be extra careful in sharing our joyful feelings to our love ones especially to the
group of post-menopausal women. This group of women according to a study got the
highest percentage (95%) of patients who suffered from TTS. Although TTS (Takotsubo
Syndrome) also occur in some other groups too.
I realized that those in the field of psychology or psychologists at that play a very
important role to the individuals who might be future victims of TTS or happy heart
syndrome. Their feelings should be well-managed in order to prevent this heart
syndrome. There should be an intervention to be developed or to be improved.
This can be done thru an information drive, seminar and workshops, distribution
of flyers, discussion of this topic on television or on social media. It can also be a
possible research study of students who wanted to pursue a course in medicine.
Each of us can also be of help by understanding also what is TTS and the
possible precautionary measures to be done to help possible victims of TTS in our
family or relatives and friends too. It is in this way we can prevent TTS if not totally
eradicate it.
