It took place on December 1st, 1955, in Montgomery Alabama. Rosa Parks, a 42 year
old African American boarded the Montgomery City bus to go home after work. It was
during the ride, when she was asked to give up her seat by bus driver James F. Blake,
along with three other african americans in order to let white passengers sit down. Her
refusal to give up her seat led to her arrest, and she was charged with a violation of
Chapter 6, Section 11 segregation law of the Montgomery City code. This event also
later led to Montgomery Bus Boycott, in which the black community would not ride the
Montgomery City buses. Their demands for the Montgomery City buses were that all
passengers will be treated well, all passengers will be seated on a first come, first
served basis, and that blacks be employed as bus drivers.
This is an act of Civil Disobedience because firstly it was non-violent, Rosa Parks only
verbally refused to cooperate with the bus drivers demands and stayed seated in her
seat. Secondly, it went against the laws of segregation, which affected the lives and
rights of the black people. Lastly, she knew the consequences of her actions, yet she
still did it to show how unjustly the laws were, and faced the violation charge which
landed her a night in a cell, before a friend bailed her out.
