Stolen by: (Vincenzo Peruggia pronounced as Vincienzo Perujia) also known as the greatest art theft of
the 20th century.
He was able to know and plan a strategy, because he was the one to make protective glasses for some
paintings including the Mona Lisa painting. He hid in the bathroom overnight until the museum closed
and took it. However, he wasnt able to get out since the exits were closed. He had to wait till the morning
to get away with the painting by hiding it in a white smock. It wasnt found missing until later in the
evening.
He waited for a few years to sell it and kept it hidden in the trunk of his car. The painting missing report
was all around the city so he couldnt sell it yet. Later on he tried to sell the painting to an art dealer,
Alfredo Geri, in Florence. Alfredo Geri thought the painting was familiar so he got an art expert to
authenticate the painting. When they found out which painting it was, they told Vincenzo that they would
keep the painting first and pay it the next day. They informed the police and then Vincenzo was arrested
and investigated on possible motive on why he stole it. At first he said he was trying to bring it back to
Italy and that the true thief was Napoleon, but then pleaded guilty and received just 8 month of
imprisonment. However, he only served 5 months.
