    rape,manypeopleimmediatelybelievedher.TheybelievedthatTomwasacriminalbecausehe
    wascoloredandbackinthattimeracismwashuge.

    Inthe1930swhitepeoplehatedblackswithapassionandinMaycombtheybelieved
    thatblacksshoulddoallofthedirtyworkwhilewhitessatbackandrelaxed.DuringTom'strial
    whichhewasaccusedofrapingMayellahesaid,Yes,suh.Ifeltsorryforher,sheseemedtotry
    morentherestofem.(264).Everyonewasshockedbecauseblacksshouldn'tfeelsorryfor
    whites.InthattimeperiodeveryonewasshockedatTom'sresponseallbecauseofracismand
    inequalityofcoloredpeople.
    Tosummarize,racismhadaimpactonhowpeopleinMaycombweretreatedinthe
    1930s.Itwasimportantbecauseifyouwerewhiteyouwereconsideredanormalcitizenandif
    youwereblackyouwereconsideredtobeabasketcasednuisance.InthecaseofTomRobinson
    theevidenceprovedthathewasnotguiltyandthathewasabenevolentpersonbecausehefelt
