Unit 3 Assignment 1

Programme Ratings
Television content rating systems are systems for evaluating the content and reporting the suitability of television programs for children, teenagers or adults.
Many countries have their own television rating system and countries rating processes vary by local priorities. Programs are rated by the organization that
manages the system, the broadcaster, or the content producers. On a programmes there is also ratings which shows the criteria of the audience for the
programme. the age-based system, which the television industry promised would help inform and assist parents in choosing appropriate shows for their children,
is making such a determination more confusing than ever before.
TV-Y
All Children
This program is designed to be appropriate for all children.
TV-Y7 Older Children This program is designed for children age 7 and above.
TV-G
General Audience
Most parents would find this program suitable for all ages.

I need to make sure that the programme ratings for

my documentary meet the target audience and the
guidelines. For my documentary I have made the
programme rating to be viewed at 13+ because I
think it will be suitable for that age.

TV-PG
Parental Guidance Suggested
This program contains material that parents may find unsuitable for younger children.
TV-14
Parents Strongly Cautioned
This program contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for children less than 14 years of age.
TV-MA
Mature Audience Only
This program is specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17.

Circulation Figures
Circulation figures for magazines has changed over the years since the internet has took over peoples lives and now
instead of reading magazines for news you can look at the news on your phone.

Here is a list of the most popular magazines in the UK.

Magazines could effect my documentary and
the reviews it could have. Magazines such as
the Sun could write an article about my
documentary in a positive way.

Web Hits
A web counter or hit counter is a computer software program that indicates the number of visitors, or hits, a particular webpage has
received. Once set up, these counters will be incremented by one every time the web page is accessed in a web browser. A hit is a request
for one file from a web server. For example, if you request (i.e. visit) a single web page which contains only text, the web server will send
you that page as a file. This process is called a hit.
This may mean that if your website is getting a lot of hits it means that your website is doing well and is attracting people to come on the
website for example advertising the website. There is a high potential for confusion here, because log analysis also involves the
interpretation of hits. The hits recorded by log files are much more numerous, and do not individually represent individual human hits
or clicks. The hits recorded by log files each represent a single pieces of information (for example a graphic such as a gif) which, when
taken together, make up page views.

YouTube and Google are one of the most popular visited sites because Google is a search engine which is used by most computer users.
The search engine is really popular to find other websites so this is a gateway to the web.

On the channel 4 website it could have a lot of web

hits depending on how many people click on the
website and view my documentary. The more
people click on the website the more the topic will
gain awareness and benefit my documentary.

Box Office Sales

Statistics and facts about the film industry
Entertainment is big business in the United States. It is expected, that the sector as a whole will have generated 564 billion U.S. dollars in
revenue by the end of 2014. Forecasts predict that the entertainment industry will grow to over 679 billion US dollars in value over the
next four years, proving its worth in domestic markets and as a major U.S. export. The film industry is one of the biggest, if not the
biggest, player in the broader entertainment sector.
Here are some statistics about films In UK 1.2bn UK spend from international feature films, building on last years figures by 40%
615m from high-end television, of which 287m is inward investment Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Game of
Thrones and 24: Live Another Day contribute to UKs busiest year for international production.

Sales CDs and DVDs

Sales stats
According to new stats from UK recorded music body BPI, the humble CD album has now seen off its digital equivalent with sales of
downloaded LPs actually declining faster than their physical rivals. In the first half of 2015, CD album sales in the UK fell 5.7% from 22.68m
to 21.38m. In the same period, sales of digital albums dropped 6.6% to 13.86m. For CDs they have dropped dramatically since streaming
services such as Spotify because this allows users to buy a subscription to listen to music without physically paying for a CD.
Also downloading CVDs and DVDs have effected the industry because websites offer illegal downloading the media so the user wont
have to pay for the DVD or CD.

DVDs
Video streaming services such as Netflix allows the user to buy a subscription fee and then can watch films without a DVD. This is called
streaming and requires a internet connection. This has effected the statistics of people buying DVDs and they have rather gone for
streaming the film or downloading it.
This statistic presents data on the number of Netflix DVD subscribers in the United States from the third quarter of 2011 to the fourth
quarter of 2015. In the third quarter of 2012, Netflix had 8.61 million U.S. DVD subscribers. In the following quarter the figure contracted
by over 380 thousand.

Film Reviews.
There are websites that give reviews of different films but some reviews may not be accurate because anyone who is a
member can give any opinion they want. Also on streaming services such as Netflix they have star ratings which can be
give stars out of 5. Some of these reviews can be put a user off watching the film because the reviews could be negative.
Some review sites which actually created by the film creators may be unreliable reviews because they want you to watch
the film so they will not have negative feedback.
Websites such as Film review and Into film have solid reviews which is more accurate.

For my documentary it will probably have a review after it is broadcasted so this could be an opportunity to
get a good review on the documentary and gain more exposure.

Game Reviews
The gaming industry has grown massively over the years and newer games and consoles are coming out every year.
These games tend to have a lot of advertisements before they come out and have a lot of reviews by professional game
reviewers. Game websites do offer a review of a game for example when bought the game customers can leave feedback
and tell users how the game is. IGN is one of the most popular reviewing site for games because gamers compare
different games and give a full detail review.
The best reviews on pre release sell the most copies of the game because the game gets a lot of attention.
Game review websites have a big influence on whether people buy the game and the reviews these websites give the
game. The most common way of doing this is when a game uploads their trailer to YouTube and you can see people
reviewing the game by liking the video or disliking it.

Fanzine Websites
Fanzine websites are really popular in the sporting scene, mainly football. Football fans have created fan websites such
as forums to post information about their club and news such as player transfers and discussions. Fanzine websites
arent normally earning any income off the website, however if advertisements are placed on the website they can start
to gain income from the website.
Videos are also shared on these websites for example bands have fan websites which they share videos of the concert
they visited and this is the same with football. Fans can share their experience with other fans and relate to each other.

Attitude Media Products

When publishing your media product you need to know your target audience and the field you are
targeting your product too. Also implementing guidelines for the user product placement in films and
international programmes (such as US drama series) has been allowed on UK television for many years.
From 28 February 2011 TV programmes made for UK audiences can contain product placement as long as
they comply with Ofcoms rules
Social Media plays a big part of attitude towards media products because most people are on social media
websites and can state their opinion on the product. This could benefit the product but could also be a
negative output on social media.
Social media could play a big part for my
documentary and the impact it could have on
people. Social media website such as twitter can
have a positive feedback from the documentary
or it could have a negative feedback.

Response to news coverage

News coverage are on a lot of social media platforms. For example twitter has implemented a
news page on the site and based on your location will show the news and trends near you. BBC
news websites also when on the site has the most important news on the first page and the top
headlines which is more interesting or important. Viewing news articles can be viewed on any
search engine and on the most popular programme Chrome shows an msn homepage which
shows the top headlines.
The most popular news coverage was the Ebola Outbreak in 2013 and became top headlines
all over every news stations and websites. This shocked the world and news teams gave the
topic a lot of coverage. In the mean time when this was happening other stuff around the world
happening didnt get attention which may angered people.
My documentary may have news coverage about the
topic because it effects a lot of people in the world so
it is important to make sure the topic gets news
coverage for it to spread over the country and world.

Response to advertising campaigns

An advertising campaign is typically broadcast through several media channels. It may focus on a common
theme and one or few brands or products, or be directed at a particular segment of the population.
Successful advertising campaigns achieve far more than the sporadic advertising, and may last from a few
weeks and months to years.
What makes advertisement good : An effective ad will inform the consumer about the product or service
you have to offer, but that advertisement also need to entertain the potential buyer. Capturing the
attention of the consumer is essential for an effective ad, and the more entertaining your can make that ad
the more effective it can be. No matter how good your ad may be, it will do your company no good if no
one sees .it. An effective advertising campaign needs to engage the interest of the viewer with an attention
grabbing design

Discussions
Group discussions is a very big part of making a media product to plan and get opinions from other
colleagues. Groups that work well together can achieve much more than individuals working on their own.
A broader range of skills can be applied to practical activities and sharing and discussing ideas can play a
pivotal role in deepening your understanding of a particular subject area. Being part of a team will help you
develop your interpersonal skills such as speaking and listening as well as team working skills such as
leadership, and working with and motivating others. It is important to review media products in groups
because more people can notice and diagnose things rather than just one person.
Before my documentary is made I will need to discuss the topic to the people
who are working for me to make sure I have a good play for the
documentary. This will have an impact on making the documentary because
having a discussion will help the development of the documentary.

Books
Libraries can be very helpful to find books which will collect and find your information. This is a
very good way to research but however it can be difficult to find the specific information you are
looking for because you will have to look through the book to find it.
Also libraries are also limited to how many books there is in the library so it could be possible
that they do not have the book you wanted. There is a way to read books online instead or use a
e book which is a electronic book and this has thousands of different books stored on the
system library.
Reviews of books could potentially determine if you are going to read it or not. Reviews can be
found online which the person after reading the book can leave a comment on how the
experience of the book was.

Journals
In accounting and bookkeeping, a journal is a record of financial transactions in order by date. A journal is
often defined as the book of original entry. The definition was more appropriate when transactions were
written in a journal prior to manually posting them to the accounts in the general ledger or subsidiary
ledger. Manual systems usually had a variety of journals such as a sales journal, purchases journal, cash
receipts journal, cash disbursements journal, and a general journal.
An electronic journal is a periodical publication which is published in electronic format, usually on the
Internet. Electronic journals have several advantages over traditional printed journals: You can search the
contents pages and/or the full text of journals to find articles on a certain subject.

Electronic journals have several advantages over traditional printed journals:

You can search the contents pages and/or the full text of journals to find articles on a certain subject.
You can read journal articles on your desktop, you don't have to be in the Library.
You can e-mail articles to yourself or download them for printing.
The article that you want to read will always be available, even when the Library is closed.

Periodicals
Periodicals are any type of publication that is published in a series, or periodically. Things like
newspapers, magazines, journals and newsletters are all periodicals, and the articles inside them are
periodical articles.
Many periodicals are written for a general audience whose readers are not expected to have specialized
knowledge or training. We usually call these periodicals magazines. However, probably even more
periodicals are written for specialists and have articles that are difficult for readers who lack that
background. Periodical articles are often the best sources to use in research report writing.
Periodicals can be weekly magazines which are for everyone to mainstream news too fashion or football
magazines.
Other examples would be a newsletter, a literary journal or learned journal, or a yearbook.

Newspapers
The publication is typically sectioned off based on subject and content. The most important or
interesting news will be displayed on the front page of the publication. Newspapers may also
include advertisements, opinions, entertainment and other general interest news. Some
newspapers are for local people in the city. Local newspapers are more than twice as trusted as
any other media channel.
We understand that for some people reading and 12 sheet newspaper should take as less as 60
minutes. Newspaper is a medium which gives maximum knowledge in minimum time. Unlike
news channels, here we have easy access to the most liked news section. Some like sports, some
like political news, some like entertainment, some business and some even weather. They know
where their liked information is located.

Film Archives
Film Archives UK (FAUK) brings together archives, archivists, associate organisations and individuals who are interested in
and committed to the work and development of the UKs public sector film archives.
Since 1895, moving images have been made in the UK. The films, which have survived and are now in our regional film
archives throughout the UK, have acquired great cultural significance because of their value to education, research,
communities, film-makers and television.
The film review is a popular way for critics to assess a film's overall quality and determine whether or not they think
the film is worth recommending. Specialist film reviewers review the films out of stars for example a good film will have
5 stars and will be features on the trailers of the film.

Having a positive review on films can benefit the

film overall so If my documentary has positive
feedback it will be positive for channel 4.

Interviews
The most common interview is the one to one. The interviewer with the interviewee. The One to
One Job Interview is a test/conversation and both parties will end the conversation with an
opinion. The interviewer if the candidate is right for the job and the interviewee if the
organisation is right for him.
General questions will analyse your problem solving abilities and your ability to socialize with
the rest of the team. Previous achievements to back any facts you mention. Even if such
achievements were at the school newspaper, employers under stand that school leavers have to
start from some where.
When interviewing people for my documentary I will
need to make sure I ask the right questions to get the
correct response the viewers want. I will also need to
make sure I interview the right people for example the
game addicts.

Audience Panels
The definition of a panel discussion is a situation in which a group of people are gathered
together to discuss an issue, often to provide feedback on something, to brainstorm solutions to
a problem or to discuss an issue of public concern in front of an audience.
Audience panels can be used for films when reviewed and discussed with other people it is more
effective and can make a good review of films.
The more people reviewing a product the better the outcome of the review will be because
some people may like the product but some also might not.

Questionnaires
Questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions and other prompts for the
purpose of gathering information from respondents. Although they are often designed for statistical
analysis of the responses, this is not always the case. Questionnaires can be used for films and other
multi media products. For the producers it can be beneficial to do questionnaires because they can
get feedback and information of the general public.
Advantages of questionnaires
1 - Large amounts of information can be collected from a large number of people in a short period of
time and in a relatively cost effective way
2 - Can be carried out by the researcher or by any number of people with limited affect to its validity
and reliability
3 -The results of the questionnaires can usually be quickly and easily quantified by either a researcher
or through the use of a software package
4 - Can be analysed more 'scientifically' and objectively than other forms of research.

RAJAR
RAJAR Ltd (Radio Joint Audience Research) was set up in 1992 to align, design and operate a
single audience measurement system for the UK radio industry serving both the BBC and
licensed commercial stations.
The company is jointly owned by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and by the Radio
Centre (the trade body representing the vast majority of Commercial Radio stations in the UK).
RAJAR collects information on behalf of over 300 BBC and Ofcom Licensed commercial radio
stations, ranging from very small local services to the national networks. Station listening by
time, duration, platform AM/FM, DAB, Online/APP, and DTV and location in car, at home, at
work, or elsewhere is recorded and published on a quarterly basis.

Own Video
In this documentary for my own video I will be using my own video footage and using my
equipment I have. Before this I did some research on the subject of the documentary and also
did some questionnaires and reviews to the general public to see if they were going to be
interested in the topic of the documentary. Instead I will focus on subjects that are controversial
or not-well known, or event that the public has largely made its mind up about. In simplest
terms, try to film things that are interesting and to avoid things that are boring or ordinary.
Even if I am familiar with the topic for my documentary it's still a very smart idea to research it
extensively before I begin filming. I will also read about topics as much as you can. Watch films
about my topic that already exist

Audience Awareness
When creating something in the media industry it is very important to make sure you know what
your target audience like and dislike. This could be solved if you have the target audience to do a
questionnaire or review of the product. This will give you a summary of what your target
audience like and could potential make the product better.
Knowing your audience whether readers or listeners will help you determine what information
to include in a document or presentation, as well as how to convey it most effectively. You
should consider your audience when choosing your tone, content, and language or else your
message may seem unfocused or inappropriate.
Before my documentary is made I will need to
make my target audience aware of the topic by
advertising the documentary on channel 4 and
when filming the documentary I will need to
target my audience by interviewing them.

Audience Profiling
Audience profiling doesnt limit your audience, it simply helps you choose where to spend your
time and money for the greatest return on your investment. Audience profiling gives marketers
the opportunity to make more targeted marketing choices and ensures that you cast your net in
the most profitable pond.
However, audience profiling isnt just a method used to understand the target audience, its also
an important part of crafting a unified goal and vision for your business, brand, or product.
Defining the target audience will help every department understand what youre working
towards.

Product market
Any entrepreneur knows that in order for a business to succeed it has to be aimed at the right
people but many make the major mistake of assuming they already know their target market.
A lot of product marketing is done through the web but can be done to the general public face
to face. Statistics can be also a good effective way to know what the market is for example what
type of television program people watch the most.
Product placement stands out as a marketing strategy because it is the most direct attempt to
derive commercial benefit from "the context and environment within which the product is
displayed or used. The technique can be beneficial for viewers, since interruptive advertising
removes them from the entertainment.

Advertising effects
The Internet alone provides many of these, with the advent of branded viral videos, banners, advertorials, sponsored
websites, branded chat rooms and so much more. Online Advertising

Posting ads on websites that receive heavy traffic is one way to get the word out about your business. Social networking
sites such as Facebook or Twitter have advertising programs with ads tailored to a particular demographic.
A traditional form of advertising, daily and weekly newspaper ads allow you to target specific geographic neighborhoods.
Attaching an incentive, such as a coupon, to the ad can help track the ad's effectiveness.
Television ads on local stations might require time and effort to produce, but can be especially effective if you sell a
product or service with a high price point. At the time of publication, strategic Media states that a TV ad can cost 50,000,
while a radio ad will cost only 1,500.
Advertising will have an impact on the documentary because if I advertise my documentary correctly it will benefit it by
making the view count go up and awareness of the topic.

Costs
For documentary film-making at the lowest-budget level, 1000 per finished minute is the cheapest
starting point for costing. However for more better equipment normally it is 2000 3000 per finished
minute. The equipment is one of the most expensive parts of making a documentary. Camera's can cost up
to 10,000 if you want the best quality, also comes with costs of microphones and cameramen.
If you consider that a one-hour documentary could easily cost 50,000 to 250,000 to make overall which
is very expensive.
Because my documentary is going to be shown on channel 4 I researched the price of the documentary. It
varies, but roughly 150K for a one hour fully commissioned Channel4 programmed. For True Stories
roughly 40K for a pre-purchase, 10K for a license but it can vary depending on the project.

Technology resources
To create my documentary I will need equipment.
Video Camera - This is the centerpiece of my filmmaking gear package. What camera i choose depends on
my budget, You can shoot a documentary on anything from your iPhone to a DSLR to a top of line digital
cinema camera.
Tripod - A necessary piece of equipment to keep your footage looking steady and professional.
Camera Light - Sometimes a pop of light from the camera can help fill in ugly shadows. A camera light is a
nice accessory to have especially in a documentary
Boom Pole - A boom mic set-up comes in handy to capture audio from a group interview, crowd scenes or
any situation where you need to gather professional audio quickly.
