IndividualityVSNationality

Everysinglepersonintheworldisanindividual,andeveryindividualhasanationality.Some
mayarguethatone'snationalityismoresignificantthanonesindividuality,but,Idisagree.A
nationagroupofpeoplewhosharedifferentthingsoncommon,sometimestheonlythingthey
shareisthelandtheyresidein,regardlessanation.Anindividual,oneperson,apersoncanhave
differenttraitsthatarespecificallyuniquetothatperson.Letthetraitsbephysical,internalor
evenjustlikesordislikes,nooneindividualcouldeverbeanotherindividual,eveniftheytried.
Nationalityisjustacontributiontoone'sindividuality
Tobeanindividualistobedistinctfromeveryotherhumanbeingintheworld.Tobe
identifiedasaperson andnottobeseenasanumberinagroupofpeopleisavalidatingaction
towardsanyperson.Individualityissomethingthatonedecidesforhimself/herself,and
nationalityissomethingthatcontributestosomeone'sindividuality.
MymothermovedtotheUnitedStateswhenshewas16becauseoftheCivilWarthatwas
happeninginElSalvador,andsheidentifiesherselfasSalvadoranandAmerican.Typically
whenwetraveltoElSalvador,shetellspeoplesheisAmerican,andwhenwearehereinthe
U.S.shealmostalwaytellspeoplesheisSalvadorianregardlessofwhotheyare.Hernationality
doesnotchange,sheisSalvadoranandsheisalsoaU.S.citizen,shejustchooseswhichtotell
people.Ithinkthatincaseslikemymother's,nationalitycannotbedeterminedbyanyonebut
theindividualthemselves.
Whendeterminingnationality,howdoyouevenfigureitout?Goingbacktotheexampleof
mymother,whatmakesherSalvadorian?Isitthatshewasbornthereandlivedtherefor16
years?Isitthatshespeaksperfectspanish?Isitthatshehasfamilythere?Yes.But,whatmakes
herAmerican?Isitthatshe'slivedherefor30years?Isitthatshespeaksperfectenglish?Isit
thatshehasfamilyheretoo?Yes.Althoughthesethingsdonotapplyeveryone,thisspecifically
appliestoherasanindividual.Therearemanywaysandreasonsastowhypeopleidentify
themselveswhattheydo,it'sjustcommoncourtesytonotquestionit.
Thinkingaboutindividualitymakesmethinkaboutatree.Whenapersonisborn,theyare
justasmallsaplinginthegroundwithmaybetwolittletwigsstickingout,onecouldcompare
thosesmallbranchestotheinfant'snameorgender.Notmuchtothechild'sindividualityyet.
But,oncethischildstartstogrow,sodoesthislittletree.Whenthetreegrows,itsproutsmore
branches.Thesebranchesareanythingandeverythingthishumanbeingchoosestorelateto
himself/herselfto.Thistreeneverstopsgrowing,newbranchesdyingandbeingreplaced,
normalforanyhumanbeing.Nationalityisjustoneofthesebranches.

Inthediscussionofindividualityandnationality,ImustagreewithMs.SuiSinFar,
individualityismoresignificantthannationality.Nationalityisagroupofindividualsthatshare
acouplethingsincommon.Whileonepersonhasaspecificself,theirownindividualityunique
tothem.
