mousehowlifeplanspeoplemakedontalwaysgothewaywewant,buthaveunexpectedturns
thatleavesgriefratherthanjoy.Thefarmertellsthemousethatlookingaheadforthefuturecan
beworthlessandhowthisproblemiscommontoallmortalcreatures,men,andmicearoundthe
world.
Therefore,Burnsismakingtheclaimthathumansputtoomuchplanningintothefuture,

ifethrowsmanycurvespeopleshouldntdwellonthepastordreamaboutthefuture,buton
thepresent.Peoplegetcaughtupwiththeirhopesforthefuturefrompastexperiences,butnever
takemomenttostopandliveforthepresentbecauseeverythingelseisuncertain.Burnswants
ustounderstandthatasmuchasweputintoplanningforfuturewewillneverknowifweget
whatweforeseen.
However,thisraisesthequestionwhetherpeoplearepessimisticthanoptimisticforthe
future.Peoplefeareverythinganditmakesithardtobepositiveiftheironlylookingatthe
negatives.Itiscommonforustonotgetwhatwewantthefirsttime,whichmakesusthen

expectthatwewontgetitthesecondtimebecausethepositivemindsetwehadfirsthas
changedourviewstonegativityduetopast.
