ThroughresearchoftheCrossRaceEffect,informationwasgatheredthroughthe
primaryresearchmediumofinterviews.Theseinterviewswereconductedwiththree
psychologiststoanalyzethesocialcognitive,aswellasperceptualexpertiseregardingtheCRE
andhowitimpactstheracialjudgementofindividuals.InterviewswereheldwithDr.StevenG.
Young,Dr.MichaelJBernstein,andDr.JohnPaulWilsonrespectively.
TheCrossRaceEffectisaphenomenonbasedoffofbothperceptualexpertiseandsocial
cognition.Thesecompetingcategoriesarebasedoffofthedifferentfieldswithin
psychologybothexperimentalpsychology,whichconsistsoflabbasedanddrivendataUnder
socialpsychology,thesocialcognitivefactorsarewhatsupportsocialcognition.TheCREisa
socialcognitiveissuebecausewhatresearchersbelieveduetothewaytheythinkaboutinand
outgroups.ItisamatterofexperienceandseeingCrossRaceFaces
Makingpeoplereallygoodatidentifyingfaces,believingS.Cognitionistherightwayover
expertise.
TheCrossRaceEffectisbasedoffbothscienceandpsychology.Thescienceaspects
havetodowiththeoccurrenceofthisnaturalphenomenoninthenaturalworld,justlikethe
weather,thermodynamics,andgravity.Thesefactorscannotbemanipulated,andcannotbe
understoodunlessstudiedandobserved.However,bothpsychologyandsciencemeetwhen
studyingtheneuroscienceandparts/functionsofthebrainandtheactivityandspatial/cognitive

processingthathappenswhensomeoneisundergoingthefacialcategorizationoftheCRE.The
location/areaofthebrainwherethisoccursisthefusiformgyrus,withinthesuperolaterallobe
ofthebrain.Thefusiformgyrusisresponsibleforfacialrecognition
itrespondscollectivelyto
faces.Theactivityinthefusiformisonlybyinpersonortangiblephotographicevidence.
Picturesseenontheinternetdoaffectactivityinthefusiformcomparedtosamerace
comparison.Inthiscase,thereismorefusiformactivitybecausethedifferenceinprocessing
leadstomorecomplexfacialrecognition.Damagestothefusiformcanleadtomisidentification
ofotherfaces,acontributingfactortoprosopagnosia,aninabilitytorecognizehumanfaces.
ProsopagnosiaisalsoaleadingcauseoftheCrossraceeffect,andinabilitytorecognizepeople
ofcertainracesoutsideofonesown.Prosopagnosiacanalsobecongenital,orfrombirth
leadingtootherfactorsthatarenottakenintoconsiderationunderthecourtoflaworwhen
placingasubjectoneyewitnesstestimony.
