Dear Parents/Guardians,
The second grade students and teachers are very excited to begin a new science unit entitled,
Shape shifters: Exploring Earth's Processes. This unit will focus on volcanoes and eruptions,
saving trees and keeping the environment clean, water, wind erosion, and mountain ranges. To
provide students with a hands-on experience outside of school and to further their understanding
of recycling, we are planning a field trip to Recycle Here, and the Lincoln Street Art Park,
located in Detroit, Michigan, hosted by Green Living Science. Green Living Science provides
field trips and tours of Recycle Here, as well as the Lincoln Street Art Park during the months of
March to November. Recycle Here is the City of Detroit's drop off recycling facility, and Lincoln
Street Art Park is an untraditional sculptural park built on a formerly abandoned industrial site.
Students will bring recyclable items to be recycled at Recycle Here and will experience what and
how Recycle Here recycles, they will learn how recyclables can be used to make meaningful and
creative artifacts at Lincoln Street Art Park. "Students will experience a thoughtful strategy and
creative design to help guide the process of urban renewal, which results in stronger
neighborhoods, tighter community bonds and a sense of ownership."
We hope your child will be able to participate. Please see the details below!
