ARMED FORCES MEDICAL INSTITUTE

BRIEF HISTORY: Armed Forces Medical Institute (AFMI) is the premier educational
institute of the Army Medical Corps. Immediately after liberation in 1971 to cope with the
expansion of Armed Forces and to ensure efficient medical support at all level, it was felt
necessary to establish an institute for imparting training to Army Medical Corps, Army
Dental Corps and Armed Forces Nursing Services officers and other paramedics on
various professional matters. It came into being on 02 January 1976.

MISSION: To impart professional trg and run courses for AMC, ADC, AFNS offrs and
ORs.

OBJECTIVE: The ultimate objective is to turn each and every member of AMC, ADC
and AFNS into military medical personnel of advanced knowledge and expertise,
capable of matching the challenge of handling modern war casualty, as well as
peacetime patient care. AFMI is well keeping with the nation building motto of the
Government. As a part of its human resource development for the nation and beyond,
Nursing Institute of AFMI started conducting BSc (Nursing) and Diploma in Nursing and
Midwifery courses to produce nursing staff for national health services.

CAPABILITIES: The Institute is capable of :

a. Conducting all sorts of professional trg to AMC/ADC and AFNS offrs.


b. Conducting tech trade trg to san asst cl III, II & I, med asst cl I and
pharmacy trg to dispensers.
c. Conducting disease study, experimental trial on efficacy of drugs and
professional research wks.

FMI publishes a bi-annual professional journal on regular basis.

(1) It contains original articles, research works, case reports,


corps news etc.

(2) The journal is circulated away medical professionals and


institutions at home and abroad.

(3) The articles also meet requirements of specialist medical officers


for their classification.

(4) The latest publication is the 41th volume published in


December 2008.
