North London Cares and South London Cares

DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
Salary 24,000 + monthly travel card + OTE bonus

ABOUT THE CHARITIES

North London Cares and South London Cares are community networks of young
professionals and older neighbours hanging out and helping one another in our rapidly
changing capital city.
Our objectives are to tackle the growing plight of isolation and loneliness not just
amongst older people but also amongst young Londoners; to help improve the
confidence, resilience, skills and connection of all participants so that older and younger
neighbours alike can better navigate the modern world; and to bring people together to
bridge widening social, generational and digital divides.
We do this because in the context of globalisation, gentrification, digitisation, migration
and the housing bubble London has become a place of social extremes. The boroughs in
which we work Camden and Islington (NLC) and Southwark and Lambeth (SLC)
contain some of the best connected people in Britain high flying graduates working in
law, PR, media, finance, etc living directly alongside some of the most isolated, with
particular challenges to do with ageing, loneliness, depression and anxiety.
The result is that older people often have deep roots in their communities, but few
connections, while young professionals often have hundreds of connections but no
roots. That disconnect wastes human potential, perpetuates social division, entrenches
isolation and is ultimately corrosive for our society.
In a dynamic city like ours, clearly these two groups have so much to gain from one
another in shared time, laughter, new experiences and, especially, friendship.
The Cares model seeks to harness the people and places around us and to mobilise a
new generation of young professionals to build relationships and share experiences with
our older neighbours in a variety of fun, authentic ways. We speak the language of
younger and older neighbours alike and make interaction on a personal level mutually
accessible, sociable, enjoyable and rewarding.
We achieve that vision through the constant development of programmes that people can
relate to and enjoy. At the cross-section of the public, private and community sectors we
work with local authorities, voluntary and community groups, businesses and individuals
to identify isolation where it occurs and to deliver enthusiastic volunteers to share time
with older neighbours. A majority of the neighbours that are part of our network live alone,
may not naturally have wide social networks, and love and look forward to new
experiences with their younger friends.
North London Cares is the public name for NL Cares Limited, a UK registered company, number 07737818; and a UK
registered charity, number 1153137. South London Cares Limited is a UK registered company, number 8757344; and a
UK registered charity, number 1157401.

Specifically, we have three core programmes. Our Social Clubs are group activities that
bring people together in community centres, cafes, pubs and parks to share time,
laughter and cultural exchange. Regular clubs include dance and dinner parties, film
nights, choirs, new tech workshops, podcasting clubs, back to work business visits and
themed get-togethers like Grand National Day.
Meanwhile, our Love Your Neighbour programme matches young professionals and
older neighbours to spend time together one-to-one, often in people's homes and
community locations, to improve the life experiences of all parties. Neighbours build
relationships on their own terms, enjoy meals together, and often become long-standing
friends.
Finally, our annual Winter Wellbeing project identifies isolation in our communities proactively through an innovative outreach campaign, and supports older neighbours
through multiple interactions and interventions to stay warm, active, healthy and
connected through the most isolating time of the year. In five years of delivering this
ambitious project North London Cares and South London Cares have knocked on a
combined 15,000 doors, held 10,000 one-to-one conversations about isolation, and given
out 450 blankets and over 18,000 in small grants.
ABOUT THIS ROLE
In your new role as Development Officer at North London Cares and South London
Cares, you will work closely with our Development Coordinator across two small and
dedicated teams to develop and expand all areas of our fundraising from inspiring
and supporting volunteers to participate in challenges, to hosting exciting events, to
managing corporate partnerships, to writing passionate, creative proposals for trusts,
foundations and other partners.
Thats a big ask. The job requires experience, creativity, versatility, technical skill,
positivity, perseverance and leadership. You need to be full of ideas, able to inspire and
tell powerful stories in writing and in person, and confident spinning multiple plates at
once. You also need to be diligent with your systems and processes to stay on top of
the multitude of opportunities available to two high profile and growing charities.
This is a special post in two special charities. Although we are young and rapidly
developing organisations, we also have the security, support and platform of major
backers including Nesta and the Big Lottery, international corporates and our partner
councils. Expanding and diversifying our income generation in innovative ways that
reflect our values and our networked approach is a tough challenge and also a huge
opportunity, for the charities and for the successful candidate alike.
When you join our teams, you will work in part from our Victoria Line-linked offices in
Euston/Warren Street (NLC) and Brixton (SLC), in part from our partner businesses and
groups across the community, and in part from home. The ideal candidate will have
experience in fundraising or development for a growing charity or business. You will be
used to working with a range of people across the public, private and community sectors.
We need someone who understands and is motivated by the demographics and social
challenges of our home boroughs and the issues we work on and in particular who is

passionate about and can clearly promote our vision for building close community
networks in order to tackle isolation and loneliness in those boroughs.
We are looking for someone who can talk to and relate to people from all backgrounds,
someone equally comfortable discussing fundraising walks over the Alps as with a group
of fifty 80-year-olds on an estate in Kilburn or Bermondsey.
ABOUT YOU
We are looking for a creative, enterprising person to fill a really important role and a
unique function across two growing charities. The ideal candidate will have a track
record of generating new income, a natural confidence with people, and experience of
and strategies for dealing with multiple tasks and challenges at the same time.
You will be outgoing, confident, full of energy; professional with an organised approach, a
clear, authentic communication style and an intrinsic understanding of the power of
networks and digital media. The stand out candidate will also have knowledge of and a
passion for the unique communities and culture of Londons neighbourhoods, alongside
technical fundraising expertise.
We need a real people-person: someone who can build trusted partnerships across our
network of 3,000 volunteers, 2,300 older neighbours, dozens of corporates, and trusts
and foundations. We also need a numbers person: someone who is methodical, target
focused and unwilling to give up.
And, working as part of two small teams but with only one other community fundraiser,
we need a self-starter: someone committed, tough, and focused working alone as well
as in teams; who is passionate about further developing, improving and sustaining North
London Cares and South London Cares over the coming years and in a challenging
environment.
In return, you will be trusted to work dynamically and independently in these exciting
young charities, with growing profiles and backing from major local and national
supporters. You will also be provided with development challenges and opportunities,
professional support from our Development Coordinator and ever-growing networks to
play a lasting, transformative role in the development of the Cares vision and family.
