ECE 432/532 Quiz 1

Due at the beginning of class on April 11

Name:
Review Chapter 1 and answer the following questions.

1. An electric machine is running as a motor. The mechanical output power is 100 hp. The
efficiency is 92%. Calculate the input electric power in terms of kW.

2. What is the moment of inertia for a solid cylinder if the radius is r and the height is h.
You can google it directly.

3. In a cooling fan drive system for a thermal power plan, the airflow and the air pressure
has the following relationship (pump performance curve): H=1.03N2+0.56NQ-0.59Q2,
where N is the fan speed, Q the flow rate, H the air pressure. All units are per unit.
Calculate the air pressure for Q=0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1 when the motor is running at full
speed, i.e., N=1.

The system head curve (friction pressure) is expressed as H=Q2 when the damper is fully
open. Please plot the head curve. Calculate the friction pressure for Q=0.4 and 0.7.

4. In physics, jerk, is the rate of change of acceleration. In other words, jerk is the derivative
of acceleration with respect to time, or the second derivative of velocity. If we know the
jerk function of a motion, how do we calculate the acceleration, velocity, and position?
