KIFA Pes ee yale pe ee ae Address DR.Ing.H. Fauzi Bowo Governor of Jakarta Capital City Government Assalamualaium we | was happy on hearing tat the painting competion forum of Jakarta Art Awards hac ‘ome tots successful end, As factual observable, the pantings submited to the (Organizing Committee are of satisfactory quality. Wha's more, according tothe judges the works show increased qualty compared to those submited othe previous Jakarta ‘At Awards competition. ‘The incroasod quality dosn't only show in the visual existence of the paintings taking pat in the competion, Moreover, increased quality also concerns the implied \iewpoints and comprehension regarding the theme of “Aspect of Big Cites” on the painters part. Such increased awareness i ofcourse important forthe Provincia Government of Jakarta Special Tertory that is postione as a bg, not to say ‘enormous, cy. The paintings offer issues for Jakarta to lean. Wy do | regard inputs fom the painters via thelr works important? AX this point | would lke to quate Marshall MeLunan the thinker thet “artists are social antennas. Artists ave society members wih special social sensitivity in ther encounters wth social aspect, particulary in big ities follows that with Jakarta Art Awards ig ces anywhere not ‘nly Jakarta, should belleve they get special inputs to deal with tele future hope people at large could enjoy hs significant and intersting exibition. My best wishes forthe exhinting painter and art lovers enjoying the exhibition. Wassalamualskum wv, arta, July 2010 DDRLIng. H.Fouzl Bowo Foreword ‘Aurora Tambunan General Charerson of JAA 2010 Viva ant Since the beginning the Jakarta Art Awards was designed to be a forum of competion ‘pen for maaification and possible development. The forum was born ofthe need for ‘@ means to encourage the improvement of artists’ abilty and to test the creativeness 4nd quality of artists’ works. Conceived as a biannual event, the Jakarta Art Awards, ‘Competition frst occurred in 2006 to be followed by the second in 2008, both in the national scope. On seeing its developments, we decided to have the 2010 competion ‘a an international afar onthe there of "Reflection of Megacities” or “Aspek-aspek kota Besar” in Indonesian ‘There are of course shortcomings on our par in internatonalzing this open ‘competition. Via vitual community network we invited painters from various countries to take part. We admit, however, that it was not very effective: oly 30 painters joned, ‘Yet thoy submitted interesting works some of which the judges selected to proceed to the final phase. ‘4s for Indonesian painters, there are 752 persons joining the competition with over £2400 works. The number is big but Iti fact means a decrease from the 2008's figure that reached 947. Some say that the decrease Is due to the numerous similar ‘competitions running in 2010. While acknowledging the quantitative decrease, it should be noted that the organizer set a condition that the maximum age of works submitted {0 the competition is 2 years. The board of judges is ofthe opinion thatthe works for the competition really show increased quaity compared to those submited tothe ‘Committee in the previous competitions, ‘To close this foreword | would lke to thank the participating painters for their ‘enthusiasm. Congratulations tothe finalists and winners. Thank you to the Board of Judges. Have a good time enjoying the JAA 2010 exhibition, Jakarta, July 2010. ‘Aurora Tambunan Budi Karya Sumadi idee Director of PT. Pembangunan lye Ancol Tk (ON BEHALF of PT. Pembangunan Jaya Ancol corporation | would Ike to express my pleasure and gratefuness for having been abe to accomplish once more an important eutural mission: the Jakarta Art Awards Painting Compatiton 2010. Moreover the “Jakarta Art Awards tis years ro longer national but an intsmational event. Now the paintings on exhibition include several were of painters frm cfferant countries such as Korea, Hong Kong and Japan. That is some people begin to tak about the event a ‘akarta Intemational At Awards, |-am particularly happy thatthe great exhibton of Jakarta Intetional Art Awards takes place atthe galery of North Art Space or NAS. This space was developed as an textension ofthe Ancol Art Bazaar Gallery that housed Jakarta Art Awards 2008 and 2008, Eater, in 2005, Ancol Art Bazaar was the verue of Golden Palate Art Awards that was the prodecessor of Jakarta Art Awards. INAS is a facity to serve the holding of at exhibitions, and we deliberately bit it ‘along some interior concept most representative of art and an up-to-date syle. In ts less than two years of age, NAS has housed numerous prestigious events that also involve international artists. NAS, faithful to is name that contains the word "north", 's positioned asa significant oasis of art in North Jakarta ready to aways offer tue regarding the boosting of people's creativity. COnthis occasion PT. Pembangunan Jaya Ancol Corporation and NAS would tke to thank both the teal and intemational atts for ther patcipaton Inthe program, Our ‘thanks also 9 to al the judges of he competion for selecting, nat without heated ‘xgument nthe process, the winners from among the finalist works. To everyone, ‘welcome and enjoy the extiiton. Jakarta, July 2010. |r. Budi Karya Sumadt 80 YEARS OF ART COMPETITION IN INDONESIA ‘Once a person takes part in a competition, actually he/she has already won a battle against him/herself. The next victory is but an added bonus from the jud Eva Riyant Hutapes ‘A competition is regarded highly important forthe word of art. The importance deals with at least sx ports, Point one: compettions encourage artists to work moro creatively, Considering tht competitions provide open ls for competitors As 4 resulta competion summons works of new subjects and values. For example, people see a work by Suradi enttied Jakarta Berouns Tus Rat Hunting Jakarta), which won the 2008 Jakarta Art Award, ‘2s dealing with @ common ieue (coruption), employing a common ‘symbol the rat, and yet beng offered by means of a highly speci, Uncommon ants anguage. In effect, an issue of moray fay deat ‘within journalism fds crystallization inthe soll and artist orm of the artor Point two; a competion generstes a special momentum that ‘artists can (and must) seize as an “opportunity”. This s because @ Competition gives stimuli to artist’ creatvty. Therefore competitions ‘ar likely to give rise to new names and figures that count on prestigious levels. Competitions can even help make actual old names ‘with signiicant achievements in need of some more highlighting. For example, Sapto Suplyo Utomo and Hayatuddin are among tens ‘fats whose fare owes to the institution of competition, Golden Palette Art Awards and Philip Mors Indonesia Art Award in hs respect. As for Ronald Manuiang, he sa serior painter whose name is, restroduced by Indotood At Awards Point throe: competitions generate winning werk that in turn provide standards forthe people regarding artworks that ae assumediy) of the highest qual. For instance, ntl now Mangu Pura’s panting *Imajnasi Bawah Laut” ‘Underwater Imaginaton’), which won the Philip Moms Indonesia Art Awards, has been regarded as his masterpiece among his other works. The same goes for Ay Tloe Christine's painting "Pigrim King” Point four; compettions create an atmosphere forthe people Postioned to wtness the competitions. The atmosphere wil Usual foster appreciation ofthe arts and ther work, regarded ‘the highest in quality among the people. And, as perceivabe in sparts competitions, say soccer and badminton, the atmosphere of ‘Compattion wil provoke peopa fo witness and get involved. Point five, a competion can serve to monitor and detect the ‘enthusiasm of Indonesian art commun to creat artworks, \Witn open and tansparent compettions thee wil be chances to learn painting and drawing at Bale Bari Studio, and watercolor and ‘orylic painting at Jakarta Institute of the Arts, AULYADI W. torn in Pasuruan, East Java, in 1988.
