Dictionaries can be helpful in learning to speak


English, but they can also be confusing [konfyoozing].
Some of the phonetic symbols they use are different
from the English alphabet. This means that the
conventional phonetic alphabet is partially [parshale]
written with foreign [forin] symbols (diacritical
marks). There is also disagreement about a few of the
sounds and how they should be represented. Because of
this, some people see the English language as
convoluted [konvolootid] and difficult to learn.
However, to read and speak well, one should learn
phonics [fonikz] first.
