Spike Jonze is an American director, producer, screenwriter and
actor. He has done a lot of different work which includes music
videos, commercials, films and television. He was born on the 22 nd
October in 1969 in Rockville, Maryland. He was born Adam Spiegel,
when he joined high school he had adopted the name Spike Jonze
and he was doing competitive skateboarding and BMX cycling.
Straight after he graduated from high school, Spike Jonze moved to
LA where he began to do some work fro a
biker magazine then he help to found the
youth culture magazine Dirt. His career
in filming started in 1992 when he has
hired to do some skateboarding footage
for their music video 100%.
Soon after this Jonze then got the
breakthrough in his directorial career by
creating a music video for Sabotage by
Beastie Boys and Hello Tomorrow TV advert for Adidas. The music
video for Sabotage that Jonze created won four MTV Video Music
Awards including the best director
award that Jonze won. Within the
same year Jonze created his creative
and innovative reputation by also
making the music video for Weezers
Buddy Holly, which was also very
successful.
Spike Jonze was also very successful
throughout the 1990s directing
music videos for many major artists
as well as directing a number of TV adverts for companies such as
Nike, Sprite, Nissan and Coca-Cola. He also moved to the other side
of the camera and featured Levis TV advert as well as the films Mi
Vida Loca (1993) and The Game (1997). In 1999 Jonze directed his
first film Being John Malkovich, for this film Jonze earned several
honours including an Academy Award nomination for best director.
Jonze is very well known for his music videos for artists such as
Fatboy Slim, Beastie Boys and Kanye West. A lot of his videos have
some of his trademark features but overall they are very different
from each other and dont really have a particular style. Spike Jonze
works with a variety of different artists but he has worked with quite
a lot of rappers, some examples of music videos he has created
would be Sabotage by Beastie Boys, Weapon of Choice by Fat Boy
Slim and Otis by Kanye West and Jay Z.
