by RobinScoll Wilson
HARLEv IAcoBs became a vteran bf Chicago when he
hitchhiked to that toddlin'town in late July, 1958, out
alienation and because
of a Drofound sense of Dersonal
-his
draft board to summon him;
he wai bored waiting for
because Senator MaCarthy had stimulated his activist's
itcb, his desire to hook into a cau:ie; because he was
cririous-with
a small town resident's naivete-about
Hippiec and Yippies; and because-whatever the fortunes
of-McCarthy, tbe Democratic Convention, the Youth In'
ternational Firty, and the National Mobilization Committee--it looked like there might be a good supply of
poontang in the balmy summir evenings in Grant Park.
- Now -this is not to ibply that most of those brave souls
at Chicago were, like Hailey, about equally interested i'!
politics and poontang. Such was clearly not the case. And
i.rnlike most bhicago-veterans, because'of his dual motiva'
tion, Harley found his exlrrience in the Windy Cjty painfully dichoiomous: it seerned lhat whenever he began to
estdblish himself with a young lady-in a bush, under a
park bench. back of the statueof General JonatbanLogan
----+omeonashouted: "Here comes 166 frrzz!" or "Let's gol

be ddired, however'devoutly, Likewise, no sooner did
Ilarley begin to pelt cops with baggies full of excremeot'
join in a Japanese-style snake dance, or marcb_ up
Michigan Avenue, than his attention was captured by a
flash of thich or the qleam of black-lined eyes, and he
found hims;lf out of i-he action, oft hunting for a bush'
a park bench. or the back of a statue.
itrustrsted 6y this altemation of events, torn by oppos.
ing motivations, Harley's tret alienation increased' Ollce'
