Physicsisthebranchofsciencethatdescribesmatter,energy,space,and
timeatthemostfundamentallevel.Whetheryouareplanningtostudy
biology,architecture,medicine,music,chemistry,orart,someprinciples
ofphysicsarerelevanttoyourfield.Physicists lookforpatternsinthe
physicalphenomenathatoccurintheuniverse.Theytrytoexplainwhat
ishappening,andtheyperformexperimentstoseeiftheproposed
explanationisvalid.Thegoalistofindthemostbasiclawsthatgovernthe
universeandtoformulatethoselawsinthemostprecisewaypossible.
Ineverydaylanguage,speedandvelocityaresynonyms.
Inphysics,thereisanimportantdistinctionbetweenthetwo.
Inphysics,velocityincludesthedirectionofmotionaswellasthedistance
traveledperunittime. Whenamovingobjectchangesdirection,its
velocitychangeseventhoughitsspeedmaynothavechanged.
