Public spaces, often overlooked and undervalued, are the backbone of cities. Good living
conditions are often associated with the experiential quality of public spaces, architect Madhav
Joshi has said.
He was speaking on the topic The unbuilt defines the built as part of the triennial lecture series
organised by Asset Homes in connection with the World Habitat Day celebrations here on
Monday.
The theme for this years celebrations is Public spaces for all.
Mr. Joshi said well-designed and managed public spaces were key assets for a citys liveability
and economy.
Such spaces had been an integral part of a places evolution and acceptance as a liveable
environment.
Dimensions
He spoke about the various dimensions of public spaces and their role in shaping the built
environment.
Mr. Joshi showed how open spaces came into being across various cultures and geographies.
Plans of cities such as Jodhpur, Brasilia, and Rome were used to highlight how built forms came
around unbuilt spaces, and how in some places, these were planned such as in the case of city
squares.
Open spaces
In the Indian context, he dwelt on streets and chowks as examples of open spaces.
Perceptions
Mr. Joshi spoke about different perceptions of open spaces, their symbolism and meaning, and of
their temporal character, changing according to time. For instance, an open space becoming a
venue for a festival.
CSR
On the occasion, the corporate social responsibility project of Asset Homes Tree Dhan was
launched.
Raghuchandran Nair, national vice-president, CREDAI, launched the project by handing over a
teak sapling to a newborn girl. Actor Prithviraj spoke on the project, being taken up in
collaboration with SUT Hospital. Asset Homes managing director Sunil Kumar welcomed the
