The story of how the Poppy became an international

symbol of remembrance is a remarkable one.

The first Poppy Day was in 1922, and we have been using this symbol
to mark the bravery and courage of all soldiers who gave their lives in
battle. The Flanders Poppy as it is called dates back to the Napoleonic
Wars, when poppies were the first plant to grow in the churned up soil
of soldiers' graves in the area of Flanders.

During Anzac Day the wearing of this simple emblem, a red poppy,
helps us to remember the soldiers who sacrificed their health, their
strength, even their lives, that we might live in a free country.
