The data centre implemented guaranteed easy data storage, hand- ling and updating facilities which have contributed considerably to the high efficiency of data processing. ‘The most important information obtained during the vestigations is ordered in four data banks (see Fig. 1) These are: hydrological data bank; river system data bank; hydroelectric project data bank; electrical system data bank. ‘The development and use of computer programs covered the processing and establishing of hydrologic information, determination and evaluation of the theo- retical potential, detailed technical definition cost esti- mation and economic evaluation of hydropower projects, the establishment of national, sectoral and regi forecasts of electrical energy demand, determination of Toad flows and economic evaluation, of transmission systems, optimization of the implementation program for generating plants and the corresponding financial analysis. A total of 21 main programs and numerous secondary programs have been developed (approximately 45.000 FORTRAN lines). ‘The minidata centre installed in the Instituto Nacional (© eacvea Eocene 17, Pd Mang Pg Co ry Late Hag, at Somer THT de Electrifcacién has the following components: a Hewlett Packard 2108 microprogrammable system with 64 k byte of core memory; a disc subsystem with $M byte of storage capacity; a 300 line/min printer; an 800 bits/in 25 in/s magnetic tape system; a 600 card/min reader; and three interactive terminals. Conclusions The methodology and the corresponding computer programs developed for the study are not project- and country-related. They can be implemented for future periodic updating of the plan results, as well as for similar studies in other Countries, especially those with hydraulic resources. ‘In addition to the results as such, this study leaves a well established method, a fully organised, efficiently operating mini data centre and a fully trained group of Guatemalan professionals, capable of executing the periodic updating of the plan. Updating of the plan is foreseen with respect to addi- tional hydrological information, updated demand for clectrical forecasts and changes in the costs of the projects. ith the completion of this study, the combined German-Guatemalan group has demonstrated the possi bility of successful use of low cost minicomputer systems for the complex planning purposes of a nationwide electrical system. a
