Adjective or Adverb
Compare the italicized words in the following pairs of sentences,
‘The whale looked sadly aeus.
In our opinion the whale looked sad.
‘We tasted the pie eager
The pie tasted deliciows.
Words such as look, aaee, appears acr, fe, grow, sme, and sound can be used
either as action verbs or as inking verbs
‘When used as action verbs, they are often followed by adverb modifiers.
We all looked jf at the new meeting hall
‘The hungry dog sniffed évpefiy around the tightly closed garbage cans
Everybody in our class agreed thar Laurie acted the part of Pandora very
nicely.
‘When these words are used as linking verbs, the modifier that follows is an
adjective used as a subject complement.
During the service all of us fele joyful abot the fueure. [not joyfully]
Hendricks sounded opefd when he announced that fresh eroops were on
the way. [noe dopey]
Laurie acted nie even though she was furious at Mrs. Crenshaw. [not
nicely] [Here the meaning of actedis “seemed” or “pretended to be” rather
than “performed.”]
‘When you are uncertain whether to use the adverb form or the adjective
form of the modifier after verhs such these, first derermine whether action is
being expressed, IF action is being expressed, use che adverb. If che verb is
being used to link the subjece wich a complement, use the adjective.
