What is this?
 Is when the daily
maximum temperature of
more than 5 consecutive
days exceeds the
average maximum
temperature by 5 Celsius
degrees.
 Without the right
precaution, can cause
serious lesions, because
the dehydration.
When this happens?

 Often happens during the “Dog Days”(between July


and September, on North countries, and December
and January, on South countries) of summer
Factor that lead to heat waves
 Pollution

 Smoke from cars

 Lack of vegetation

 Few rivers and lakes

 Large cities without or low vegetation


More sensitive to who?
 Children early in life

 Elderly

 People with chronic diseases - cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, diabetes,


alcoholism.

 People taking anti-hypertensives, anti-arrhythmic drugs, diuretics, anti-


depressants, neuroleptics, etc..

 People with mental health problems

 Obese people

 Manual workers heavily exposed to heat

 People living in homes with poor conditions


Cases of heat waves
 In Índia, almost 49,3 degrees.(27th May,2010)

 In Mexico,7th May, 2010)

 In Paraguay, 12th February, 2010(killed almost sixty people)

 In Europe, 2003,more than 50 degrees killed inside of 30.000 and


50.000 people
Suggestions for days of heat waves
 Use light clothes

 Drink lots of water

 Avoid alcoholic drinks

 Use a cap or a headscarf to protect the


head from the heat.
