 School-Wide Positive Behavior Plan
Progressive Phases of Implementation

Every school is at different stages of implementation and
effort. A Positive Behavior Plan takes time to implement
well. Depending on your starting point, it may take up to
three years to design and implement all aspects of the plan.
While it is usually significant behavior problems that come to
mind when one hears the term behavior plan, it is essential
that a school start with proactive and preventive measures
first. A coordinated preventive approach will have a
significant impact on reducing the overall number of
referrals school-wide. Start by identifying areas and systems
that will have the highest impact with the most students.
Creating a comprehensive school-wide positive behavior
system requires investing in time, coordination of resources
and staff competency. Focusing on outcomes, data, practices
and systems is essential to sustaining such an effort. On the
next few pages is a three-phase model to guide
implementation. A time frame is not provided, since each
school will vary regarding a starting point and organizational
factors. It is important to note each stage builds upon the
previous one.
