Minutes for EGSS General Meeting on Wednesday, 7 December, 2016.

Territorial Acknowledgment
The EGSS acknowledges with respect the history, customs, and culture of the Coast Salish and Straits
Salish peoples in particular the Lekwungen and WSNE peoples on whose lands we at the
University of Victoria are grateful to have the opportunity to work.

News/Updates
1. Colleens Retirement Party

Thanks to everyone who came out, the party was a success

2. Committees end of semester news/updates

-

EGSS bank account has been transferred over to Hector and Bassam
Academic committee:
1. Pomodoro nights went well, we hope to have them more often next term
with food at only the finale; went over budget, so considering bake sale
for next term to help with funds
2. Considering holding a social media eventmight team up with
conference committee for a 2-day event; tentatively the first week of Feb.
Conference committee:
1. Planning to host colloquium in either Jan. or Feb.
Social committee:
1. Snowflake Gala this coming Sat., Dec. 10th; plans are going well, approx.
25 RSVPs so far (including grad students and faculty), please encourage
people to come out; operating at no cost to EGSS

3. MA Position Elections

Suggestions/ Improvements for Next Semester

1. Future event proposals?
- Proposal to create a publication committee whose main role would be sustaining
an EGSS publication
- Proposal to create a handbook for future EGSS members to in the interests of
preserving institutional memory
2. New committee proposal (Rachel Lallouz)
- Proposal to create Committee for Representation of Minorities in Academia
(tentative title)

1. Primary goals: support for students who identify as part of a minority

group or who are doing research that falls into a minority group
2. EGSS supports this idearecommend that Rachel liaises with David Eso
and Alison Chapman, and then opens committee to interested members
next term

Upcoming Events
1. Snowflake Gala 10 December, 2016

Next meeting will likely be 11 January 2017

Overall EGSS feedback:
1. Pomodoro is a great event
2. Consider writing into guidelines some sort of overlap between positions
to ease transitions from year to year
