Woe to The Neurotic Immigrant Visiting His Distant Home

By Noman Mahmood

A word he had overheard kept gnawing at his tired brain,

how could a couple of ears cause so much pain ?

Arrived at the place he left, when he was little

it's dark and empty, everything looked so brittle.

A man now much aged walked past with such scorn

made him feel, if he shouldn't have been born.

Neighbor's dog barking with so much fear

as if to say you are no longer welcome here.

Entered his old home everything covered with dust

surely, a desperate attempt to erase his past.

Wondered if he had lost his roots and his true identity

he hurriedly sat down to indulge in self-pity.

Behind a large desk and a rightly placed mirror,

candle light on his face and eyes open wide in sheer terror.

"Alone with myself at last” he softly muttered

time to take stock of what really mattered.
