Mental Characteristics:
Self-corrects – watches film and asks questions.
Enjoys hard work. Leads the team in sprints and in the weight room. Loves to run the offense.
Is a good listener. Talks to his teammates and actively listens.

Gets his team in and out of the huddle efficiently.
Can watch a football game on television and isolate on his position.
Can see the “whole play” and knows what each blocker and runner is attempting to do.
Takes the time during the pre-snap to focus on the defense and knows what they are doing.
Can use a white board and marker to show with 100% accuracy his knowledge of the passing tree.
Understands each of the eight route packages – regardless of position. (Boomer, Flood, Smash, Bullets,
MiniBullets, Tennessee, Hawaii, Cadillac)
Understands each of the three wideout screens – and can explain the blocking assignments. (Bubble, Spot
and Lazer)

Emotional Characteristics:
Is often heard bragging up the offensive line.
Does not get rattled.
Knows that he will often be praised and criticized for things that are well beyond his control or
responsibility.
Knows that what goes on in the huddle is his responsibility 100% of the time.
Wants the ball in his hands when the situation is critical.
Knows the difference between “Go!” and “Let’s Go!”
Patient with himself and teammates.
Good sense of humor. Enjoys his teammates. Includes everyone.
Physical Characteristics:
Physically strong.
Great throwing mechanics.
Great vision. Can see downfield between and over the top of both offensive and defensive linemen.
Excellent body control. Can run at top speed, break down and change direction.
Is tough. Can take the physical challenges of playing quarterback in the Holt system.
Is in excellent cardiovascular shape - can run 1.5 miles under 10 mins.
Job Description:
At pre-snap is able to determine the defensive coverage and the subsequent vulnerabilities of the defense.
At pre-snap always takes a signal from the widest split receiver on each side – indicating the most
advantageous short passing route. (0 Hitch, 1 Slant, 5 Up, 9 Out)
Confirms every player’s alignment in the called formation.
Visualizes the play at pre-snap.
When running Chase – makes his first decision on pre-snap. Run or throw.
When running the ball on Chase – makes his second decision – hand off or keep.
Does not rush the play. Efficient mechanics receiving the ball and handing off.
Hustles through play fakes after the hand off.
When passing – knows where to look first – second – third. Pulls the trigger without any doubt in his
head.
Is able to run Holt’s two minute offense effectively (calls the right plays) and efficiently (keeps the team
moving.)
