Dear readers,
At last, the journal HELIOS, after having flagged for some time, has found its way
again and this time we hope that it will have continuity and constant presence into the
literary world as a pulpit of a free and creative dialogue for and with literature and its
translation.
The biggest part of the present issue is a tribute to the important Greek poet Miltos
Sahtouris on the occasion of the honorary event that was held by the International
Writers and Translators’ Centre of Rhodes and the Cultural Committee “Waves of
Three Seas” (on Saturday, the 28th May 2005). An interesting and moving point of
the whole material presented in our issue is the address of the poet himself to his
distant friends here in Rhodes as well as to the island of Rhodes; it had been recorded
on the 12th of June 2004 in the clinic.
In the second part of our journal a new section is initiated including current topics
from the member countries of the Cultural Committee “Waves of Three Seas”. With
this chapter the journal HELIOS acquires a new dynamic arising from topics that
puzzle, concern and interest not only the literary world of different countries but also
a wide range of people and these topics may have made newspaper headlines.
Finally, starting from the present issue, translations of works of modern Greek writers
will be presented in the third section in an effort to disseminate the contemporary
Greek literature and to familiarize the foreign readers with the modern Greek
literature. We begin with the translated excerpts from the book of Eleni Ladia «Η
γυναίκα με το πλοίο στο κεφάλι» [The woman with the ship on the head] (ESTIA,
2006) and from the book of Achilleas Kyriakides «Ο καθρέφτης του τυφλού» [The
mirror of the blind man] (POLIS, 2005) into Bulgarian, Swedish, Lithuanian and
Turkish.
To conclude, I would like to point out that you can be informed about the events and
the activities of the I.W.T.C.R. by the detailed programme that you can find in the
final pages of the issue. The Centre initiates a new cycle of action in different fields
(educational programmes, translation workshops, creative writing etc) in order to
contribute greatly to the promotion of the culture, knowledge, thinking and creativity
at local and international level.

Editor’s note
Miltos Shatouris
“The Soldier Poet”
In June 2007, after the new Three Seas Writers and Translators’ Committee was
elected for a mandate of three years, I was suggested by the T.S.W.T.C. to become a
member of the Editorial Board of Helios as a representative of the Committee. It was
an honor for me to undertake those obligations from Bulgarian poet Tsvetanka
Elenkova, who before me kept close contacts with the International Centre of Writers
and Translators’ in Rhodes in the process of preparing and supplying the journal with
interesting material. The tradition of Helios that we inherited is to have special topics
from time to time dedicated to contemporary authors with worldwide influence. Those
issues may contain a special tribute to an author from the country member of the
Three Seas’ Council and material linked with cultural events/hot-button themes in
these countries. The content of Helios at all times is coordinated by both -- the Centre
and the Committee – throughout the whole process of making the issue. This is the
style of work and the tradition that was passed to us by our pathfinders, and we shall
honor it. This issue is devoted to one of the greatest Greek poets of our times Miltos
Sahtouris (1919-2005). In this particular issue of Helios the reader will find Sahtouris’
poems, his handwriting, and contributions from the people who knew and loved him
and his work. Helios’ Editorial Board is grateful to all the contributors that made this
tribute to Miltos Sahtouris possible.
The other aspect of Helios is a bilingual and literary trend that we also intend to
preserve and intensify. The journal will go on and will publish poetry, short fiction,
autobiography, essays and other writings from Greece and the member countries of
the Three Seas’ Council. Helios is going to be a bridge between different parts of the
world, a meeting point at which writers of the diverse cultures may find each other,
and learn from their encounters with difference. Helios will continue its commitment
to making links between the cultures, while both encouraging ‘newcomers’, new
writers, and publishing those who are more established. The aim of Helios is to reflect
diversity of international writing so that understanding and cooperation can be
achieved at the level of culture. Writers inevitably see things different than politicians,
and by bringing into the light of ‘helios’ our many and diverse voices, we can learn
something more about life and live it better.
