Candidate Adam Clayton Powell Demands Rangel Ethics Report
(New York, NY) Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell, who is running against embattled Rep. Charlie Rangel for Congress, sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week demanding that she move the Ethics Committee to finally issue its findings regarding Rangel. The Ethics Committee has been investigating Mr. Rangel’s alleged tax evasions, fundraising improprieties, failures to disclose assets, illegal occupation of four rent stabilized apartments, questionable residency claims, and other indiscretions for years.
“The fix is in,” said Powell. “First Rangel plays fast and loose with his homes, taxes, and financial dealings, then the Ethics Committee plays games with the investigation. Does anybody really believe that it takes this long to establish basic facts?”
Powell was referring to the widespread belief that the Ethics Committee is stalling its results in order to avoid further damaging Rangel before the election. Mr. Rangel has spread a lot of money around Congress, including to members of the very Ethics Committee charged with investigating him.
“Can you imagine an accused swindler making a campaign ‘contribution’ to the judge on his case?” said Powell. “No wonder people are disgusted with politics.”
Powell’s letter to Speaker Pelosi explained that local election law and New York machine politics make it that if Rangel resigns or leaves office after he is elected, but prior to the full service of his term, his successor will be hand-picked by local party bosses.
“This is machine politics at its worst,” said Powell. “It isn’t fair to the people of Upper Manhattan. The Ethics Committee is keeping voters in the dark, and if Speaker Pelosi does not direct them to issue the report that we have called for, she is aiding and abetting in the cover up. The people deserve to know the truth about Charlie Rangel.”
Assemblyman Powell urged Speaker Pelosi to move the Ethics Committee to issue a report detailing what it has learned so far. He called for a deadline of July 21st, 2010, which gives Congressional staffers plenty of time to compile a simple progress report.
