Appeal to Travel Sites: Help Defeat Belize Human Trafficking

INDRODUCTION

My name is Vivian Trill. I’m writing this appeal on behalf of the Organization for
Responsible Tourism (ORT), calling upon online travel sites to help stop human
trafficking in Belize. Belize is a human trafficking superhighway. ORT has a worldwide
following for its Belize tourism boycott, growing daily through Internet and social media.

Responsible tourists are taking the Belize tourism boycott seriously as is the travel
industry. We know that because our blogs and websites are attracting ads from travel
industry members. So the word is spreading globally and now has demonstrated traction
with the tourism industry.

HOW TRAVEL SITES CAN HELP STOP BELIZE HUMAN TRAFFICKING

We are asking travel sites to support ORT in its campaign to stop human trafficking in
Belize. ORT’s Belize tourism boycott has red-flagged San Pedro, Ambergris Caye as a
tourist no-go human trafficking zone.

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye is heavily populated with ficha bars specializing in
exploiting women victims of human trafficking. The Town of San Pedro, population
12,000, counts 90 human trafficking bars featuring forced prostitution of human
trafficking victims.

We are asking all international travel sites to block San Pedro, Ambergris Caye from its
sites and to monitor carefully reviews of this Central American human trafficking hub.

Further, we appeal to travel sites to post a caution making travelers aware that San Pedro,
Ambergris Caye is a red-flagged human trafficking zone.

APPEAL

In submitting this appeal to online travel sites I am urging them to help the Organization
for Responsible Tourism stop human trafficking in Belize

Specifically, I am endorsing the efforts of online travel sites to block San Pedro,
Ambergris Caye, Belize, from its sites and to post a caution advising travelers that San
Pedro, Ambergris Caye is a red-flagged human trafficking zone.
