In this program we conduct educational research with an emphasis on the following aspects: the values and mechanism of a learning system suitable for lifelong learning; methods and a support system based on the learner's point of view; curriculum development and teachinglearning methodologies mainly applied to elementary education.

In this program we conduct educational research with an emphasis on the following aspects: the pedagogy and psychology of children with disabilities; the development of educational methods, curricula and teaching materials which foster the social independence of children and adults with disabilities.

Program in Learning and Curriculum Development

In this program we conduct interdisciplinary, comprehensive and advanced educational research, with an emphasis on the following aspects: the values and principles of a learning system suitable for the 21 st century; the development of methods and support systems; the development of curricula and teaching-learning methodologies mainly for elementary education; methodologies oflearning support which encourage the independence of children and adult students with disabilities. We also foster personnel who can work as researchers and specialists with advanced skills in the area of learning support.

• Special Features

The Undergraduate Program of Education covers all aspects of education from pre-school teaching to higher education, as well as lifelong learning. Each student can learn according to his or her own interests. We offer instruction which accommodates personal needs, since we provide education for small groups of students. Additionally, we proactively accept professors and students from foreign countries, thereby creating an environment of international cooperation. After graduation, students can teach at educational institutions and/or become active in areas related to education. Another path for students is to enter a graduate school in order to further develop their expertise and maximize their skills.

1 To accomplish the objectives ofthe Graduate School of Education, we have established the following goals with regard to education, research and service activities:

I) Promoting advanced research for a broad range of educational sciences, based on the key concept of "learning", which, as one of mankind's essential activities, can lead us to a more satisfying lifelong learning society.

2) Establishing a pioneering new educational system for the 21 st century; one which will accommodate various areas of educational science by integrating theoretical and practical studies.

Program in Science, Technology and Social Studies Education

In this program our educational research covers a broad range of scientific areas, including natural science, mathematics, technology and information science, and social science, by focusing on the process of developing scientific understanding. This program also focuses on teaching-learning principles, methodologies and curriculum development which contribute to improvements in the quality of divergent studies in science and culture.

In this program we conduct educational research on the Japanese language as a mother tongue and as a second language, as well as English as an internatiouallanguage, by focusing on the following areas: the developmental process of, and theories behind, language acquisition, processing, and production; historical cultural studies of language; teaching-learning principles, methodologies and curriculum development which contribute to improvements in the quality of language and culture.

Program in Arts and Science Education

In this program, aimed at the self-actualization of each individual and the progress of culture and science in the 21 st century, we conduct advanced and developmental education and research on the significance, objectives, methodologies and curricula in learning and education pertaining to science, language and lifelong activity, all of which are key factors for lifelong learning for people of all ages. We also foster researchers and specialists in the area of cultural education development.

Program in Higher Education Development

In this program we conduct educational research on a variety of phenomena and issues in education from sociological and international viewpoints, with an emphasis on the following aspects: ideas and thought; history; methodologies;

curricula; administration and management; policies and systems.

In this program we conduct educational research on human behavior and psychological processes from the perspectives of cognition, education and clinical work. Additionally, we carry out research aiming to develop personnel who can address issues of the human "mind" in contemporary society.

Program in Education and Human Science

In this program we conduct educational research in the following areas of higher education: policy development, operation and administration; international comparative research; historical research; curriculum development; connections between secondary education and higher education; the development of teaching competence for university staff.

In this program we promote interdisciplinary, comprehensive and advanced research based on theoretical and experimental studies in a variety of educational sciences: ideas and thought, history, policies, higher education, the psychological mechanisms, and basic processes of human development throughout a person's life. We also seek to deepen the understanding about the nature of unsolved problems with regard to educational science. By acquiring the methodologies for these areas, researchers and specialists will possess a high competence in research and education along with the ability to propose corresponding policies.

International Exchange

in the Graduate School of Education

The guiding principles of Hiroshima University are: "the Pursuit of Peace"; "Creation of New Forms of Knowledge"; ''Nurturing of Well-rounded Human Beings"; "Collaboration with the Local, Regional and International Communities"; "Continuous Self-development". Research exchange programs and the presence of students from overseas countries are wonderful opportunities for the actualization of these principles.

The countries with which we have signed the "International Exchange Agreement Among Universities" include Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, The Republic of Korea, Malaysia, The Netherlands, New Zealand, The Philippines, Poland, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, The United Kingdom, and The United States. In fact, the Graduate School of Education and the Undergraduate Program of Education have accepted foreign students from 63 different countries and regions. Currently, a total of 176 international students are studying here, including 2 undergraduate students, 92 graduate students, 46 research students and 36 auditors. Additionally, we offer "Special Program for International Students in Education" (Master's Course) which has been adopted as one of the International Priority Graduate Programs by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Japanese Government. This program invites incumbent teachers and administrators in 13 Asian countries (ASEAN countries, China, the Republic of Korea, and Mongolia), and fosters them as leadership educators who can contribute to the educational development in their home countries.
