William Shakespeare Film Festival in Bangalore

Bangaloreans have a glorious chance to know the bard… we mean, William Shakespeare
as the National Gallery of Modern Art along with Bangalore Film Society is screening
films based on the bard’s plays on weekends starting July 24, 2010.

Kurosawa's Throne of Blood

The ongoing Shakespeare festival has BBC productions which are direct narration of his
works. However, there are a bunch of films that are inspired by his plays but they play
out in different cultures, worlds and time lines.

Throne of Blood
This Kurosawa classic is based on Macbeth and set in feudal Japan. Mikio and Washizu,
generals in the Lord’s army defeat the enemies and are returning to the castle. In the
forest, they meet a spirit who foretells their future.

Washizu, forced by his wife, murders the lord, becoming lord of the castle. But his evil
deeds come back to haunt him.

Nominated for Gold Lion, Venice Film Festival in 1957.

Romeo Juliet and Darkness


This love-struck couple’s woeful tragedy now gets played out in Nazi-occupied
Czechoslovakia where a young student hides a Jewish girl in his apartment. Only he
knows of her existence. But soon the boy’s mother gets to know; then the apartment
complex and therein hangs Hana and Pavel’s future…
