Bible Study About “Haste” and “Hasty”

(compiled and formatted by Bill Stevenson)

Note: The Scripture is from the KJV with many modernization changes. I was surprised that of the 64
hits, that only 6 were in the New Testament and 0 were in the Epistles. I did not use the verses
that were just historical in nature.

To get away from danger--

Genesis 19:14-15 & 21-22
“14 And Lot went out and spoke with his sons-in-law, who married his daughters, and said,
‘Get up and get out of this place, for Jehovah will destroy this city.’
But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.
15 And when the dawn rose up, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, ‘Rise up!
Take your wife and your two daughters who are here,
lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.’
21 And He said to him, ‘See, I have accepted you concerning this thing also,
that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken.’
22 [Go in] haste [or a hurry], escape there,
for I cannot do any thing till you have come there.’
Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.”
Deuteronomy 32:28-36
Moses said for God,
“28 For they are a nation void of counsel,
neither is there any understanding in them.
29 Oh that they were wise, that they understood this,
that they would consider their latter end!
34 Is not this laid up in store with Me, and sealed up among my treasures?
35 To me belongs vengeance, and recompense;
their foot shall slide in due time:
for the day of their calamity is at hand,
and the things that shall come upon them make haste.
36 For The LORD shall judge His people,
and repent Himself for His servants,
when He sees that their power is gone,
and there is no one remaining bond or free.”
1 Samuel 23:26-27
“26 And Saul went on this side of the mountain,
and David and his men on that side of the mountain;
and David made haste to get away for fear of Saul,
for Saul and his men surrounded David and his men about to take them.”
27 But there came a messenger to Saul, saying, ‘Haste [or hurry] and come,
for the Philistines have invaded the land.’”

Leads to mistakes--
2 Samuel 4:4
“And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet.
He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel,
and his nurse took him up, and fled:
and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee,
that he fell and became lame.
And his name was Mephibosheth.”

1
Isaiah 59:1-3 & 7
“1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened that it cannot save;
neither His ear heavy that it cannot hear:
2 but your iniquities have separated between you and your God,
and your sins have hid His face from you, that He will not hear.
3 For your hands are defiled with blood,
and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies,
your tongue has muttered perverseness.
7 Their feet run to evil,
and they make haste to shed innocent blood;
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity,
wasting and destruction are in their paths.”
Mark 6:22-26
“22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in and danced,
and pleased Herod and them that sat with him,
the king said unto the damsel,
‘Ask of me whatsoever you will and I will give it you.’
23 And he swore to her, ‘Whatsoever you shall ask of me, I will give it you,
up to the half of my kingdom.’
24 And she went forth and said to her mother,
‘What shall I ask?’
And she said, ‘The head of John the Baptist.’
25 And she came in straightway with haste to the king, and asked, saying,
‘I will that you give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.’
26 And the king was exceeding sorry;
yet for his oath's sake and for their sakes who sat with him,
he would not reject her.”
Proverbs 1:10 & 16
“10 My son, if sinners entice you, consent not.
16 For their feet run to evil,
and make haste to shed blood.”
Proverbs 14:29
“He [or she] who is slow to wrath
is of great understanding;
but he [or she] who is hasty of spirit
exalts folly [foolishness].”
Proverbs 21:5
“The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness;
but of every one that is hasty only to poverty.”
Proverbs 28:20
“A faithful man [or woman] shall abound with blessings;
but he [or she] who makes haste to be rich shall not be innocent.”
Proverbs 29:20
“See you a man [or woman] who is hasty in his [or her] words?
there is more hope of a fool than of him [or her].
Ecclesiastes 5:2
“Be not rash with your mouth,
and let not your heart be hasty to utter any thing before God:
for God is in Heaven and You upon Earth;
therefore let your words be few.”
Ecclesiastes 7:9
“Be not hasty in your spirit to be angry:
for anger rests in the bosom of fools.”

2
Psalms 116:10-11
“10 I believed, therefore have I spoken;
I was greatly afflicted:
11 I said in my haste, ‘All men are liars.’”
Psalms 31:22-24
“22 For I said in my haste,
I am cut off from before Your eyes,
nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications when I cried unto You.
23 O love the LORD, all you His saints,
for The LORD preserves the faithful,
and plentifully rewards the proud doer.
24 Be of good courage,
and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the LORD.”

Indicates anxiety--
Psalm 22:19
“But be not far from me, O LORD;
O my strength, haste to help me.”
Psalms 38:22
“Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.”
Psalms 40:13
“Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me;
O LORD, make haste to help me.”
Psalms 70:1
“To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance.
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
make haste to help me, O LORD.”
Psalms 70:5
“But I am poor and needy, make haste unto me, O God:
You are my help and my deliverer;
O LORD, make no tarrying.”
Psalms 71:12
“O God, be not far from me;
O my God, make haste for my help.”
Psalms 141:1
“A Psalm of David. LORD, I cry unto You:
make haste unto me;
give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto You.”

In response to God the Father, Scripture, and Jesus Christ--

Exodus 34:5-7
“5 And The LORD descended in the cloud,
and stood with him there,
and proclaimed the name of the LORD.
6 And The LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed,
‘The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering,
and abundant in goodness and truth,
7 keeping mercy for thousands,
forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,
and that will by no means clear the guilty;
visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children,
and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.’
And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.

3
Psalms 119:60
“I made haste
and delayed not to keep Your commandments.”
Isaiah 28:13 & 16
“13 But the Word of The LORD was to them
precept upon precept, precept upon precept;
line upon line, line upon line;
here a little, and there a little;
that they might go, and fall backward,
and be broken, and snared, and taken.
16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD,
‘Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone,
a tried stone,
a precious corner stone,
a sure foundation;
he [or she] who believes shall not make haste.’”
Isaiah 52:12
“For you shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight,
for The LORD will go before you;
and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.”
Luke 2:15-20
“15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into Heaven,
the shepherds said one to another,
‘Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass,
which The Lord has made known to us.’
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph,
and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad
the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen,
as it was told to them.”
Luke 19:5-10
“5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said unto him,
‘Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at your house.
6 And he made haste, and came down,
and received Him joyfully.
7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying,
‘That He was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
8 And Zacchaeus stood and said unto The Lord:
‘Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor;
and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.’
9 And Jesus said to him, ‘This day is salvation come to this house,
for as he also is a son of Abraham.
10 For The Son Of Man is come to seek and to save that who was lost.’”
Acts 22:17-21
The Apostle Paul testified,
“17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem,
even while I prayed in the Temple, I was in a trance;
18 And saw Him saying to me, ‘Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem
for they will not receive your testimony concerning Me.”

4
19 And I said,
‘Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue
them who believed on You;
20 And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed,
I also was standing by and consenting to his death,
and kept the raiment of them that slew him.’
21 And He said to me, ‘Depart: for I will send you far off to the Gentiles.”

To serve others--
Genesis 24:45-46
“45 ‘And before I had done speaking in mine heart,
behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder;
and she went down unto the well, and drew water;
and I said unto her, “Let me drink, I ask thee.”
46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder,
and said, “Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also”;
so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.’”
Acts 22:17-21
The Apostle Paul testified,
“17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem,
even while I prayed in the Temple, I was in a trance;
18 And saw Him saying to me, ‘Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem
for they will not receive your testimony concerning Me.”
19 And I said,
‘Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue
them who believed on You;
20 And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed,
I also was standing by and consenting to his death,
and kept the raiment of them that slew him.’
21 And He said to me, ‘Depart: for I will send you far off to the Gentiles.”

To share good news--

Genesis 45:9 & 13
“‘9 Haste [or hurry], and go up to my father, and say unto him,
“Thus says your son Joseph, ‘God has made me lord of all Egypt;
come down to me,
tarry not.’”
13 And you shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt,
and of all that you have seen;
and you shall haste and bring down my father here.’”
Exodus 10:16-17
“16 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste;
and he said, ‘I have sinned against The LORD your God, and against you.’”
17 Now therefore forgive, I ask you, my sin only this once,
and pray to The LORD your God,
that He may take away from me this death only.”
Daniel 2:25
“Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus to him,
‘I have found a man of the captives of Judah,
who will make known unto the king the interpretation.’”
Luke 1:26-42
“26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David;
and the virgin's name was Mary.

5
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, ‘Hail, you who are highly favored,
The Lord is with you: blessed art thou among women.’
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying,
and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, ‘Fear not, Mary: for you have found favor with God.
31 And, behold, you shall conceive in your womb and bring forth a son,
and shall call His name “JESUS”.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called The Son Of The Highest;
and the Lord God shall give to Him the throne of his father David:
33 And He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever;
and of His kingdom there shall be no end.’
34 Then said Mary to the angel, ‘How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?’
35 And the angel answered and said to her,
‘The Holy Ghost shall come upon you,
and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you:
therefore also that holy thing Who shall be born of you shall be called The Son Of God.
36 And, behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.’
38 And Mary said, ‘Behold the handmaid of The Lord;
be it unto me according to your word.’
And the angel departed from her.
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass that when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary,
the babe leaped in her womb;
and Elisabeth was filled with The Holy Spirit:
42 And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said,
‘Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.’”

Concluding advice:
Philippians 4:4-8
“4 Rejoice in the Lord always.
I will say it again: Rejoice!
5 Let your gentleness be evident to all.
The Lord is near.
6 Do not be anxious about anything,
but in everything,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brothers [and sisters],
whatever is true,
whatever is noble,
whatever is just,
whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely,
whatever things are of good report--
if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--
meditate about such things.

6
1 Corinthians 10:12-13
“12 Wherefore let him [or her] who thinks he [or she] stands
take heed lest he [or she] fall.
13 There has no temptation taken you but such as is common to man [and woman];
but God is faithful, Who will not suffer you to be tempted [or tested]
above that you are able;
but will with the temptation [or test] also make a way to escape,
that you may be able to bear it.”
Matthew 5:10-16
“10 ‘Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake;
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
11 Blessed are you, when men [and women] shall revile you, and persecute you,
and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for My sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad;
for great is your reward in Heaven;
for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you.
13 You are the salt of the Earth;
but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted?
It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out,
and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 You are the light of the world.
A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel,
but on a candlestick and it gives light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men [and women],
that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father Who is in Heaven.’”
