Family Socialisation.

Family socialisation is probably one of the most influencing factors in a person’s life, that will teach
and help them accept the “norms and values” of society. If you consider the amount of time that is
spent with their family, say for at least the first 16 years of their life, it is logical for this to be the
case.

When you are growing up, especially up to the age of 5, their parents/family will be their primary
care givers and will have the biggest social influence on them. One reason for this is because as a
child one of their most used learning techniques is in observation. So when they look at their
parents/family and their behaviour, routine and traditions within the family, this is what they take in
and accept as “normal” behaviour in society.

The rights and wrongs in society are also primarily taught by their parents as well, so that they will
be socially accepted. So for example if a child strips in public, their parents will most likely, take and
dress the child, while explaining that this is not normal behaviour that is accepted in society. Or if a
child hits another child, the parents will explain that this is wrong and unacceptable in society. Again
this is preparing the child for the rules of society and social control, for later on in life. This
socialisation is so that the child will be accepted in and accepts their place in society
