Mortgage arrears in Ireland rose significantly between 2006 and 2010. The number of mortgages over 90 days in arrears grew from 11,252 in 2006 to 32,321 in 2010 Q1, with the largest increases occurring between 2008 and 2009 as the financial crisis took hold. Mortgages over 180 days in arrears also rose sharply during this period, from 794 in 2006 to 21,817 by 2010 Q1. The total number of mortgages remained relatively stable around 790,000-794,000 over the period reported.
