Antitumor Antibiotic Drugs:

Mode of Action:

 A type of anticancer drug that blocks cell growth by interfering with DNA, the genetic material in
cells. Also called anticancer antibiotic and antineoplastic antibiotic.
 Interfere with DNA by stopping enzymes needed for cell division or by altering the membranes that
surround cells.
 These agents are cell cycle non-specific.
 Major toxicities affect the hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and cardiovascular systems.
 In contrast to non-specific alkylating agents, anti-tumour antibiotics, such as doxorubicin, seem to
have greater selectivity for cancer cells than normal cells, based on their improved clinical efficacy.
