Antibiotic Antitumor Drugs
Antibiotic Antitumor Drugs
Mode of Action:
A type of anticancer drug that blocks cell growth by interfering with DNA, the genetic material in
cells. Also called anticancer antibiotic and antineoplastic antibiotic.
Interfere with DNA by stopping enzymes needed for cell division or by altering the membranes that
surround cells.
These agents are cell cycle non-specific.
Major toxicities affect the hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and cardiovascular systems.
In contrast to non-specific alkylating agents, anti-tumour antibiotics, such as doxorubicin, seem to
have greater selectivity for cancer cells than normal cells, based on their improved clinical efficacy.
