Film Report #1

Due Thursday, September 9th

You will write about a film of your choice, however, the film must be seen at a movie theatre. The
purpose of this critique is not only to get the cinema experience, but to analyze a current film.

The following should be included in the paper:

1. Discuss 2 themes of the film. You will back up your themes, with examples from the film
as we did in David and Lisa.

2. Three types of shots must be included. We will begin to study those next week to give
you a better understanding of what I’m looking for. (Ex: Fade Outs, Close-ups, etc.)

3. Apply one idea that we have gone over in our notes. (Ex: Auteur Theory, Suspension of
Disbelief, Fluidity of Movement, etc.)

4. Comment on the performance of one actor of the film. What made the performance
convincing, compelling or entertaining? Of course, if you dislike an actor’s work, you
may comment on that instead.

5. However…you can also include comments on:

• Production Design
• Special Effects
• Music/Sound
• Screenwriting
• Costumes
• Lighting/Visuals

This critique must be 2 pgs. long. Typed. Double-Spaced. Times New Roman 12 Point Font. A
cover page must also be included.
