<P>What type of motherboard you need depends partly on w
hat CPU you intend to use.
<P><B>Socket 7:</B> You're out of luck if you were hopin
g that your new motherboard could support both an MMX Pentium and the Pentium II
, to give you more flexibility in the future. The Pentium II requires a slot rat
her than the MMX Pentium's Socket 7, and it uses a different chip set. However,
Socket 7 also accommodate's the latest CPUs by AMD, Cyrix, and other Intel compe
titors. However, you should still verify with the reseller that the CPU and moth
erboard you want are compatible. For good measure, check with the lists of compa
tible motherboards that <A HREF="http://www.amd.com/K6/k6mbl/k6mbl.html" TARGET=
"_top">AMD</A> and <A HREF="http://www.cyrix.com/support/mboard/mx-brds.htm" TAR
GET="_top">Cyrix</A> post on their Web sites. (There are BIOS and electrical iss
ues.)

<P><B>Slot 1, Slot 2:</B> With its Pentium II CPUs, Inte
l introduced its Single Edge Contact (SEC) cartridge and Slot 1 connector. The S
EC cartridge contains both the CPU and 512K of L2 cache RAM, which reside on a s
mall daughtercard encased by the cartridge that plugs into the Slot 1 edge conne
ctor on the motherboard. As of this writing, no Intel competitor had produced a
slot-based CPU just yet, but expect that to change over time. Intel's ultra high
-end Pentium Pro replacement-the Xeon-will introduce the Slot 2 connector, which
will support greater multiprocessor functionality. Xeon systems and the Slot 2
connector should remain important only for server and workstation applications.
<P><B>Choosing Your CPU:</B> Now that Intel has released
its Celeron processor, essentially a Pentium II without an L2 cache, expect the
company to begin a fairly quick phaseout of its MMX Pentiums. Like the Pentium
II, the Celeron requires a Slot 1 connector, though it comes in a package somewh
at different than the Pentium II's SEC. cartridge. In the meantime, Intel's comp
etitors will introduce still-faster Socket 7 offerings, including some that will
integrate support for special 3-D command extensions. Intel will aim its 233MHz
to 400MHz Pentium IIs at the mainstream and high-end desktop markets.
