2.2 Connections - General

2.2.1 Shop connections shall be welded or bolted. Field connections shall be bolted, unless field welding is indicated on the Drawings.

2.2.2 Unfinished bolts with lock washers may be used to connect secondary members such as purlins, girts, ladders, and door frames. All other bolted connections shall be made with high strength bolts, nuts and washers.

2.2.3 All bolted connections shall have a minimum of two (2) bolts.

2.3 High Strength Bolted Connections

2.3.1 All high strength bolted connections shall be bearing type connections, unless otherwise noted on the Drawings.

2.3.2 Connections shall comply with the requirements of AISCIRCSC "Specification for Structural Joints using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts".

2.4 Welding

2.4.1 Welds and welding procedures shall conform to the applicable portions of the AISC Specifications and AWS Dl.l, "Structural Welding Code-Steel".

2.4.2 Wherever possible, all welded connections shall be made using AISC and A WS "prequalified'' welded joints.

2.4.3 Welding which is not "prequalified" shall be qualified by the CONTRACTOR in accordance with A WS D 1.1. Records of qualification shall be sent to the OWNER.

2.5 Fabrication

2.5.1 Structural steel fabrication shall be in accordance with AISC Specifications and Code of Standard Practice.

2.5.2 Steel as fabricated shall be straight, not distorted, and within AISC tolerances. 2.5.3 Surfaces shall not contain fins, burrs, deep gouges, and other irregularities.

Sharp edges shall be reduced by grinding to 1/8" radius, welds shall be made smooth and uniform, and free of cracks, projections, undercuts, overlaps, inclusions, and other detrimental defects.

2.6 Surface Preparation and Shop Painting

2.6.1 Except as noted below, steel surfaces shall receive one shop prime coat. Refer to painting specifications for materials, surface preparation, etc.

2.6.2 The following surfaces shall be left unpainted:

Surfaces which will be in direct bonded contact with concrete or fireproofing. Contact surfaces in slip-critical connections. unless the surface is blastcleaned and the coating is certified as class A or B per the test method in Appendix A of the AISCIRCSC specification.

3 Execution

3.1 Erection - General

Erection work shall be in accordance with AISC Specifications and Code of Standard Practice.

Field Measurements

Before starting erection work. verify location and elevation of all foundations, anchor bolts, leveling plates and existing structural steel, and promptly report to the OWNER any errors or discrepancies so that immediate correction may be made.

Handling

Assume responsibility for safety and condition of steel until erected work is accepted by the OWNER. Steel shall be handled in a manner that will maintain it free of mud, dirt, or other foreign substances and that neither the material nor the shop applied prime paint will be damaged. Damage to work and materials of others resulting from improper handling of steel or failure to maintain adequate precautions, shall be the CONTRACTOR's responsibility and he shall arrange for the necessary repairs at his expense.

3.4 Storing

3.2

3.3

If required and available, adequate storage space for steel and necessary tools and equipment will be allocated at the site. Keep stored parts properly drained and clear of ground by means of timbers and blocking or other means.

3.5 Setting Steel

3.5.1 Accurately erect structural steel to lines and levels established in field from data shown on the design drawings. Temporarily brace and bolt to resist dead loads, wind and erection stresses, and to ensure safety to the structure until permanent field connections are completed.
