Section 2.3 – Slope Reg p72 (16-22)(32-36)(44-48) evens

Definition: The slope of a line is the ratio of the change in y-coordinates to the corresponding
change in x-coordinates. The slope measures how steep a line is. The slope is often referred to as
rate of change. It measures how much a quantity changes, on average, relative to the change in
another quantity, often time.

Formula to find the Slope given two points (x1, y1) (x2, y2)
y − y1
m= 2
x 2 − x1

EX1. Find the slope of the line ST1. Find the slope of the line
that passes through (-1,4) and (1,-2). that passes through (1, 3) and (-2,-3)
Graph the line Graph the line

EX2. Graph the line that passes through ST2. Graph the line that passes
2 −3
(-4, -3) with slope through (1, -3) with slope

CONCEPT SUMMARY

Parallel lines ( // )– Have the same slope.

Perpendicular Lines ( ┴ ) – Slope is the negative reciprocal.

EX3. Graph the line through (-1, 3) that is // ST3. Graph the line through (1, -2)
To the line with equation x + 4y = - 4 that is // to the line with eqt. x- y = -2

EX 4. Graph the line through (-3, 1) ST4. Graph the line through (2, 1)
That is ┴ to equation 2x + 5y = 10 That is ┴ to equation 2x - 3y = 3
