EARLY LIFE….

• Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela – July 18, 1918 at Mvezo, Transkei


• Primary education – local mission school
Secondary education – Wesleyan secondary school, Healdtown
B.A. Degree – University College of Fort Hare
• Student’s Representative Council
• Whitkin, Sidelsky and Eidelman’

CAREER PATH & ACHIEVEMENTS…

• 1944 : Co-found the ANC Youth League


• 1951 : Elected President ANCYL
• 1952 : Arrested for rebelling against unjust laws (Defiance
Campaign)
• 1960 : The ANC is banned & Mr. Mandela detained
• 1964 : Imprisoned for acts of sabotage and was later released
after 27 yrs in 1990
• 1980 : Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding
• 1981 : Bruno Kreisky Award for merit in the field of human
rights
• 1993 : Awarded Nobel Peace Prize
• 9 May, 1994 : Elected as the 1st Black President of democratic
S.A.
• 1995 : Awarded Africa Peace Award
• 1998 : Presented with Award in Recognition of his Contribution
to Democracy, Human Rights and Freedom
• 11 Feb, 2000 : The Nelson Mandela National Museum is
officially opened in Soweto
• Nov 2009 : Announcement of “Mandela Day”
