Risenhoore® APUSH Summer Assignment: ‘The Required book is: Howard Zinn, “A People’s History of the United States: 1492-present.” Areas of focus should include: Chapters 1-2; skim through 3-4; chapters 5-14 (review heavily.. the core of our course next year); chapters 15-25 skim through Book Review Guidelines represents An analytic or critical review of a book or article is not primarily a summary; rather, it comments on and evaluates the work. To keep your focus, remind yourself that your assignment is primarily to discuss the book's treatment of its topic, not the topic itself. Your key sentences should therefore say "This book shows...the author argues" rather than "This hhappened...this is the case." Book reviews should be at least three pages, or ten paragraphs (intro, 8paragraphs to answer each of the questions below, and a conclusion). Your review should be typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman, left page alignment, & one inch margins. Try to stay in third person and active voice as much as possible; because it is your opinion, you are given some leeway....but every other sentence should not start with “I thought...” What isthe specific topic of the book? What overall purpose does it seem to have? For what readership is it written? (The preface, acknowledgements, bibliography and index can be helpful in answering these questions. Don't overlook facts about the author's background and the circumstances of the book's creation and publication.) Does the author state an explicit thesis? Does he noticeably have an axe to grind? What are the theoretical assumptions? Are they discussed explicitly? (Again, look for statements in the preface, tc. and follow them up in the rest of the work.) ‘What exactly does the work contribute to the overall topic of your course? What general problems. and concepts in your discipline and course does it engage with? What kinds of material does the work present (e.g. primary documents or secondary material, literary analysis, personal observation, quantitative data, biographical or historical accounts)? How is this material used to demonstrate and argue the thesis? (As well as indicating the overall structure of the work, your review could quote or summarize specific passages to show the characteristics of the author’s presentation, including writing style and tone.) Chapter Four Assignment: Read page 100-101 and answer the questions for analysis on page 101. Chapter Five Assignment: Contrast the treatment of slaves in Rome and China, You may use graph format. Chapter Six Assignment: Answer the DBQ on page 172. Chapter Seven: Describe the spread of Buddhism to Asia and Christianity in Africa.
