Order of Operations!

 The order of operations are very important

when dealing with expressions like we will
see today. For a little reminder on what the
order of operations are pay close attention to

Aug. 25, 2010 – P. O. D.

Use the order of operations to simplify.

1) 3+4•2

2) 12 – 6 ÷ 3

3) 6 • (5 – 7) + 2

4) (4 + 3) • 2 – 11

5) 8 ÷ 4 + 10 • 2
Sec 2 - 1: Evaluating and Writing Algebraic
Expressions

Objectives:
1) To evaluate algebraic expressions.
2) To write algebraic expressions.
Vocabulary-

Variable – A symbol that represents one or more

numbers.

Algebraic Expression – A mathematical phrase

with at least one variable.
Ex 1) Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

Evaluate each expression. Use p = 2,

n = 3, and s = 5.

a) 2p + 7

b) p + (n • s)
Check Understanding: Example 1
Evaluate each expression. Use n = 3,
t = 5, and y = 7.

a) n + 2t

b) n + (t • y)

c) 3n + t – 2y
Ex 2) Writing Algebraic Expressions

Write an algebraic expression for each word phrase.

a) a temperature of t degrees increased by 5

degrees

b) five cats fewer than c cats

c) the product of 5 and n nickels

d) a dinner bill of d dollars divided among five

friends
Check Understanding: Example 2

Write an algebraic expression for each

word phrase.

a) p pens decreased by 16 pens

b) six hams more than h hams

Ex 3) Writing Word Phrases

Write three different word phrases for x + 2.

Check Understanding: Example 3

Write a word phrase for each algebraic

expression.

a) 5+n

b) p÷3

c) c - 50
Ex 4) Real-World Problem Solving

Public Service The Environmental Club

is making posters. The materials for each
poster cost $4. Write an algebraic
expression for the cost in dollars of p
posters.
Check Understanding: Example 4

Each of the nine students in the club is

going to hang t posters. Write an algebraic
expression for the total number of posters
the students will hang.
