In the context of its 10th anniversary,

Cultural Encounters hereby invites to the

international seminar:

Race: Idea, Concept and Reality?

Friday, September 10, 2010

13:00-16:00
Auditorium 45
Roskilde University

In Denmark, racism emerges in the public debate on a regular basis.

However, the debate consistently evades investigating and discussing in what
ways race is a factor in the structuring of society and social relations in
contemporary Denmark and elsewhere in the world. In large parts of the
academic environment, the category was relegated to fiction a long time ago.
Our aim with this seminar is to discuss the possible ways in which the
concept of race can be used in Denmark today - a debate that is already
under way in our environment, as well as in the other Nordic countries.

To enrich this discussion and put it into perspective, we have invited

Director of the Institute for the Study of Race and Social Thought at
Temple University (US), Prof. Lewis R. Gordon, and Mr. Shelley
Moorhead (US – former Danish- Virgin Islands), founder and President of
the African-Caribbean Reparations & Resettlement Alliance (ACRRA).

The event is open to students, scholars and civil society in general with an interest in race
and the problems of racism. The event will be held in English. Entrance is free.

The seminar will be followed by a reception at Cultural Encounters.
