Designing logistic information

system
• Logistic information system caters to the specific
information needs for decision making in the areas of
logistic management. It consist of following elements.

• Information sources-There are two basic resources

namely external customers and internal department.

• Information collection system-Mail, fax or electronic data

exchange.

• Storage-information storage is done on magnetic

tapes,cd’s or the hard disk of centralized computers.
• Processing-Advanced technology has helped
processing to acquire voluminous data.
• Retrieval-An advanced computer data warehousing
and mining system will facilitate instant data.
• Report formatting-It generates reports as per
requirements of the users.
• An appropriate software designed for the installed
system makes it possible to generate reports.
The criticality of a decision will determine the speed and
accuracy needs of the desired information. However, to reduce
the risk involved in decision making, the following features are
required while designing the LIS
Accuracy

Characteristics of LIS
• Accuracy: Increased accuracy in measuring inventory
level reduces decision uncertainty. A high degree of
accuracy always helps minimize the risk element in
making a decision.
• Availability: Operating level data should be readily
available and retrievable.
• Timeliness: The addition and subtraction of
information should be on a real time basis.
• Flexibility: Information requirements in the formats
needed by internal users and external customers of
an organization.
• Format: LIS should be designed to satisfy the
information needs of system users in the format of
their choice
• Interactive: LIS should bring into notice of system
users if the safety levels of inventory dangerously
deviate from the norms.

What is RFID..?
RFID Components

An antenna or coil.

A transponder (RF tag) electronically programmed with unique information.

Transponder that contains the data to be transmitted is called an RF tag & is the core
of the RF-ID System

Host Computer & Appropriate Software.

RF-ID Operation
Applications

Airline Baggage Tracking.

Vehicle Security System.

Hotel Room Access.

Live stock Tracking.

Parcel Shipping System.

Valuable Asset Tracking.

Toll System.
Satellite Communication
It provides a fast & high volume channel for information movement around the globe

Allow communication between drivers & dipatchers

Provides up-to-date information

Used by retail chains to transmit quickly their sales back to the headquarters.
