INTRODUCTION

Erectile dysfunction/impotence is a sexual dysfunction that is characterized

by the individual’s inability to develop or maintain a penile erection for satisfactory
intercourse.

Even though erectile dysfunction is treatable at all ages, it affects 15 – 30

million American men. Erectile dysfunction usually has a physical cause.
However, sometimes this condition can be caused by psychological factors.

Currently, erectile dysfunction/impotence has several treatment options,

which include psychotherapy, drug therapy, vacuum devices, and surgery.

This subject has been and still remains taboo and a source of great anxiety
and stress for men all over the world.

A NOTE ABOUT HOW THIS REPORT WAS ORGANIZED:

CHAPTER ONE:

OVERVIEW OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION/IMPOTENCE

In this chapter, we will take a look at the background of erectile

dysfunction/impotence— what it is and what causes it. When you begin to
understand what erectile dysfunction/impotence is and what it can do, you are on
your way to taking control of this condition and your life. Let’s start our journey on
that road to renewed health.

WHAT IS A SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION?

In men, sexual dysfunction refers to difficulty engaging in sexual
intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual dysfunction in men.
Sexual dysfunction may result from either physical or psychological factors. In fact,
many sexual problems result from a combination of both. A physical problem may
lead to psychological problems (such as anxiety, fear or stress), which can, in turn,
aggravate the physical problem. Men sometimes pressure themselves or feel
pressured by a partner to perform well sexually and become distressed when they
cannot (performance anxiety). Performance anxiety can be troublesome and
further worsen a man’s ability to enjoy sexual relations.

NORMAL SEXUAL FUNCTION

Normal sexual function is a complex
interaction involving both the mind (thoughts, memories
and emotions) and the body.

The nervous, circulatory and endocrine (hormonal)

systems all interact with the mind to produce a sexual
response. A delicate and balanced interplay among all parts
of the nervous system controls the sexual response in men.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 6
Desire (also called sex drive or libido) is the wish to engage in sexual activity.
Thoughts, words, sights, smell, or touch may trigger it. Desire leads to the first
stage of the sexual response cycle, excitement. Excitement is sexual arousal.
During excitement, blood flow to the penis increases, leading to an erection. Also,
muscle tension increases throughout the body. In the plateau stage, excitement
and muscle tension are maintained or intensified.

Orgasm is the peak or climax of sexual excitement. At orgasm, muscle

tension throughout the body further increases. The man experiences contractions
of the pelvic muscles followed by a release of muscle tension; semen is usually, but
not always, ejaculated. Although ejaculation and orgasm often occur nearly
simultaneously, they are separate events. Ejaculation can occur without orgasm.
Also, orgasm can occur in the absence of ejaculation, especially before puberty, or
with the use of certain drugs (such as some antidepressants).

After an orgasm, a man returns to an un-aroused state. Thereafter, men

cannot have an erection for some time (refractory period), often as short as 20
minutes or less in young men but much longer in older men. The time between
erections generally increases as men age.

WHAT CAUSES SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION?

• Psychological Causes of Sexual Dysfunction:
• Anger towards a partner; Anxiety;
• Depression;
• Discord or boredom with a partner
• Fear of pregnancy, dependence on another person, or losing control;
Feeling of detachment from sexual activities or one’s partner;
• Guilt;
• Inhibitions or ignorance about sexual behavior;
• Performance anxiety (worrying about performance during
intercourse); and
• Previous traumatic sexual experiences (for example, rape, incest,
sexual abuse, or previous sexual dysfunction).

www.NaturallyStiff.com 7
WHAT IS ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION/IMPOTENCE?
Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is the inability to achieve or maintain an
erection. Every man is occasionally unable to achieve an erection; this is normal.
Erectile dysfunction should be a concern when the problem is frequent or
continuous.

Erectile dysfunction can range from mild to severe. A man with mild erectile
dysfunction may occasionally achieve a full erection, but more often he achieves an
erection that is inadequate for penetration. He may frequently be unable to achieve
an erection at all. A man with severe erectile dysfunction is rarely able to achieve
an erection.

Erectile dysfunction becomes more common with age but is not part of the
normal aging process. About half of men 65 years of age and three-fourths of men
80 years of age have erectile dysfunction.

WHAT CAUSES ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION/IMPOTENCE?

To achieve an erection, the penis needs both an adequate inflow of blood and
a slowing of blood outflow.

Disorders that narrow arteries and decrease blood inflow (such as

atherosclerosis, diabetes or a blood clot) or surgery on the blood vessels can cause
erectile dysfunction. Also, abnormalities in the veins of the penis can sometimes
drain blood back to the body so rapidly that erections cannot be sustained despite
adequate blood flow.

Neurological damage is another possible cause of erectile dysfunction.

Damage to the nerves leading to or from the penis will also produce erectile
dysfunction. Such damage could result from surgery (most commonly prostate
surgery), spinal disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, peripheral nerve disorders,
stroke, alcohol and drugs.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 8
Occasionally, hormonal disturbances (such as abnormally low levels of
testosterone) cause erectile dysfunction. Also, factors that decrease a man’s energy
level (such as illness, fatigue and stress) can make erections difficult.

Many drugs can interfere with the ability to achieve an erection, especially
among older men. Drugs that commonly cause erectile dysfunction include
antihypertensives, antidepressants, some sedatives, cimetidine, digoxin, lithium
and antipsychotics.

Psychological issues (such as depression, performance anxiety, guilt, fear of

intimacy and ambivalence about sexual orientation) can impair the ability to
achieve erections. Psychological causes are more common in younger men. Any
new stressful situation, such as a change of sex partners or problems with
relationships or at work, can also contribute.

SYMPTOMS OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION/IMPOTENCE

Sex drive (libido) often decreases in men with erectile dysfunction, although
some men do maintain a normal libido. Regardless of whether libido changes, men
with erectile dysfunction have difficulty engaging in intercourse either because the
erect penis is not sufficiently hard, long or elevated enough for penetration or
because the erection cannot be sustained. Some men stop having erections during
sleep or upon awakening. Others may attain strong erections sometimes but are
unable to attain or maintain erections other times.

When testosterone levels are low, the result is more likely to be a drop in
libido than erectile dysfunction. Low testosterone levels can cause gradual
development of many symptoms including enlargement of breast tissue
(gynecomastia), raised pitch of the voice, shrinking of testes (testicles) and loss of
muscle mass.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 9
HOW IS ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION/IMPOTENCE DIAGNOSED?
To diagnose erectile dysfunction, a doctor performs a general physical
examination and examines the man’s genitals. The doctor may also assess the
function of the nerves and blood vessels that supply the genitals. This assessment
is done by measuring the blood pressure in the legs. Measurement of blood
pressure in the legs may reveal a problem with the arteries in the pelvis and groin
that supply blood to the penis. In addition, an examination of the man’s rectum
may reveal a problem with the nerve supply of the penis.

In addition to these physical examinations, a blood sample is taken to

measure the level of testosterone. Certain blood tests can help identify diseases
that may lead to temporary or permanent erectile dysfunction. For example, blood
tests can reveal evidence of diabetes, which can lead to permanent erectile
dysfunction, or infection, which can lead to temporary erectile dysfunction.

If your physician suspects a problem with the arteries or veins, specialized

tests may be performed. An ultrasound examination can reveal narrowing or
blockages within the arteries of the penis.

CHAPTER TWO:

CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT FOR ERECTILE

DYSFUNCTION/IMPOTENCE

Some men and their partners may choose not to pursue treatment for
erectile dysfunction.

Physical contact without an erection may satisfy their needs for intimacy and
fulfillment. Sometimes, discontinuing use of a particular drug can improve
erections.

The advances in treatment of erectile dysfunction have caused an increase in

the number of men seeking treatment. Some of these advance techniques include
suppositories, injectable medication, implants and vacuum devices.

CONVENTIONAL DRUG TREATMENTS

Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Beginning at about age 30, the production of testosterone (the main male
sex hormone) in men usually decreases an average of 1 to 2% per year. This decline
differs from the usually rapid and nearly universal hormonal changes of menopause
in women, but the decline in testosterone is sometimes referred to as male
menopause or andropause. The rate of testosterone decline also varies greatly
among men. Many men in their 70s have testosterone levels that match those of
the average man in his 30s.

All men with low testosterone levels develop certain characteristics

associated with aging, including decreased libido, decreased muscle mass,
increased abdominal fat, thin bones that easily fracture, decreased energy level,
slow mathematical and spatial thinking and a low red blood cell count.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 11
Many men are interested in taking testosterone to slow or reverse
development of these characteristics, but this is only helpful for men with
abnormally low levels of testosterone.

Complications of Testosterone Replacement Therapy

The most worrisome side effect of testosterone replacement therapy is the
worsening of prostate disease. Without knowing it, many men have small prostate
cancer that would likely never produce symptoms. Testosterone can make prostate
cancers grow, so testosterone replacement therapy could cause an unnoticed
prostate cancer to produce symptoms or become lethal. Testosterone also worsens
benign prostatic hyperplasia, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate.

Testosterone replacement therapy is recommended only for men whose

blood test show low testosterone levels and who have no prostate disease. Men
taking testosterone need to be checked frequently for prostate cancer. Such testing
may detect cancers early, when they are more often curable.

Testosterone replacement therapy may help men whose erectile dysfunction

is caused by abnormally low testosterone levels. Unlike other drugs, which work by
increasing blood flow to the penis, testosterone works by correcting a hormonal
deficiency. Testosterone can be taken in many forms, including pills, patches,
topical creams, and injections. Side effects include liver dysfunction, increased red
blood cell counts, increase risk of stroke and enlargement of the prostate.

Other Drug Treatments

Many drugs are used to treat erectile
dysfunction. In general, most drugs given to treat
erectile dysfunction are drugs which increase blood
flow to the penis. These drugs are given orally or
are applied locally—by injection or insertion into
the penis.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 12
Sildenafil is the drug most frequently used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Sildenafil, which is taken by mouth, increases the frequency and rigidity of
erections within 30 to 60 minutes, erections last about 10 to 30 minutes. The drug
is effective only when the man is sexually aroused. Side effects of Sildenafil include
headache, flushing, runny nose, upset stomach, and vision problems. More serious
side effects, including dangerously low blood pressure, can occur when Sildenafil is
taken with certain other drugs (such as nitroglycerin or amyl nitrite). Because of
this, a man should not take Sildenafil while taking drugs such as nitroglycerin.
Drugs similar to Sildenafil are likely to become available in the future.

Other oral drugs that have been used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction
are phentolamine, yohimbine, and testosterone. Phentolamine is sometimes
prescribed for erectile dysfunction but is less effective than Sildenafil. Yohimbine is
occasionally used to treat men whose erectile dysfunction is caused by
psychological factors, but the drug can cause side effects (including anxiety,
shaking, rapid heart rate, and increased blood pressure) and is only minimally
effective.

Drugs injected or inserted into the penis widen the arteries that supply blood
to the penis. Men who cannot tolerate drugs taken by mouth can often be treated
with these drugs.

Alprostadil, in the form of a pellet (suppository), can be inserted into the

penis through the urethra. When used alone, Alprostadil may result in an erection,
but it is more effective when combined with another treatment, such as a binding
device. Alprostadil may cause light-headedness, a burning sensation of the penis
or, occasionally, a prolonged painful erection (priapism).

www.NaturallyStiff.com 13
Complications of Drug Treatments

Priapism
Priapism is a painful, persistent erection unaccompanied by sexual desire or
excitement. Priapism probably results from abnormalities of the blood vessels and
nerves that cause blood to become trapped in the erectile tissue (corpora
cavernosa) of the penis. In most cases, priapism is caused by drugs taken by mouth
or injected into the penis to cause erection. Other known causes of priapism
include blood clots, leukaemia, sickle cell disease, a tumor in the pelvis, and an
injury to the spinal cord, although, at times, no cause can be found.

Symptoms of Priapism
Several symptoms help differentiate priapism from normal erections.
Priapism lasts longer, usually several hours. Sexual excitement does not
accompany priapism, and the erection is painful. Also, in priapism, the penis may
be soft.

The treatment of priapism depends on the cause. Any drug that appears to
cause the priapism is discontinued immediately. Injection into the penis of a drug
that will decrease an erection (for example, epinephrine, phenylephrine,
terbutaline, or ephedrine) can relieve priapism caused by penile drug injection.
Spinal anaesthesia may relieve priapism caused by spinal cord injury. If a blood
clot is the probable cause, surgery to remove the clot or restore normal circulation
in the penis is necessary.

Usually, if other treatments are ineffective, priapism can be treated by

draining excess blood from the penis with a needle and syringe and using fluid to
wash out any blood clots or other blockages from the blood vessels. One or more of
many possible drugs may also be used, depending on the underlying cause.
Prolonged priapism usually impairs erectile function permanently.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 14
Because these serious side effects occasionally occur, a man usually takes his
first dose of Erectile Dysfunction medications under observation in a doctor’s
office.

A man can also induce an erection by injecting drugs (such as alprostadil,

papaverine, and phentolamine) into the shaft of his penis. Injection is one of the
most effective ways to obtain an erection. However, many men are unwilling to
inject their penis. Also, the injection can cause priapism, and repeated injections
may eventually produce scar tissue.

OVER THE COUNTER (OTC) TREATMENT

Constriction and Vacuum Devices

Most men with erectile dysfunction can achieve erections by using a
constriction device with or without a vacuum device. These devices are among the
least expensive treatments for erectile dysfunction, and they enable a man to avoid
the side effects that can occur with drug treatment. However, the devices can cause
excessive bruising in men who are taking blood-thinning (anticoagulant) drugs and
in those with diseases that interfere with blood clotting. Constriction devices
should not be left on for longer than 30 minutes.

Constriction devices (such as bands and rings made of metal, rubber, or

leather) are placed at the base of the penis to slow the outflow of blood. Medically
engineered devices can be purchased with a doctor’s prescription in a pharmacy,
but inexpensive versions (often called “cock rings”) can be purchased in stores that
sell sexual paraphernalia.

A constriction device used alone may produce an erection in a man with mild
erectile dysfunction, especially when the problem is maintenance of the erection. A
constriction device can also be used in combination with a vacuum device. A
constriction device occasionally causes pain or interferes with ejaculation.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 15
Vacuum devices (which consist of a hollow chamber attached to a source of
suction) fit over the penis, creating a seal. Suction applied to the chamber draws
blood into the penis, producing an erection. Once an erection is achieved, a
binding device is applied to prevent the blood from flowing out of the penis.

SURGICAL TREATMENT
When erectile dysfunction does not respond to other treatments, a device
that simulates an erection (prosthesis) can be surgically implanted in the penis.

A variety of prosthetic devices are available. One type consists of firm rods
that are inserted into the penis to create a permanently hard penis. Another
prosthesis is an inflatable balloon with a small pump (which may be part of the
prosthesis). Surgical implantation of penile prosthesis requires at least a 3-day
hospitalization and a 6-week recovery before intercourse is attempted.

THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES

Psychological Therapy
Some types of psychological therapy (which include behavior-modification
techniques, such as the sensate focus technique) can improve the mental and
emotional factors that contribute to erectile dysfunction. Psychological therapy can
even help when the erectile dysfunction has a physical cause, because psychological
factors often compound the problem.

Specific therapies are selected based on the particular psychological cause of

the man’s erectile dysfunction. For example, if the man is suffering from
depression, psychotherapy or antidepressants may help erectile dysfunctions.
Sometimes psychotherapy can reduce anxiety about sexual performance in which
erectile dysfunction results from any cause. Improvement may take a long time,
and many sessions are usually required. A man, and often his partner, must be
highly motivated for psychotherapy to work.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 16
Sex Therapy: The Sensate Focus Technique
The sensate focus technique may help couples that are having sexual
difficulties because of psychological rather than physical factors. The technique
aims to make both partners aware of what each finds pleasurable and to reduce
anxiety about performance. It is often used in the treatment of decreased libido,
sexual arousal disorder, orgasmic disorder and erectile dysfunction (impotence).

The technique has three steps. Both partners must become comfortable at
each level of intimacy before proceeding to the next step.

The first step focuses on the

sensation of touching, rather than the likelihood of
sexual arousal or intercourse. Each partner takes
turns touching any part of the other’s body, except
the genitals and breasts.

The second step allows partners to touch any part of the other’s body
including the genitals and breasts. However, the focus remains the same—on the
sensation of touching, not on sexual response. Intercourse is not allowed.

The third step involves mutual touching, eventually leading to sexual

intercourse as the couple becomes more comfortable with touching and being
touched. The focus is on enjoyment rather than on orgasm.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 17
CHAPTER THREE

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS AND NATURAL REMEDIES

Forget the great myth of impotence. It’s not all in your mind. An estimated
15 million American men are consistently unable to achieve or maintain erections.
What’s more is that 80 to 90 percent of the time, the cause of the erectile
dysfunction is physical.

Most often, impotence is caused by a high-fat diet that can block the blood
flow that causes erections, lack of exercise or other reasons. Impotence can also be
a side effect of medication. The natural remedies in this section—in conjunction
with medical care and used with your doctor’s approval—may help prevent or
relieve impotence, according to some health professionals.

YOU NEED TO SEE YOUR MEDICAL DOCTOR

If you have diabetes or arteriosclerosis and aren’t able to maintain an
erection as frequently as usual; and your impotence is persistent or getting worse.

ACUPRESSURE
“Acupressure on the Sea of Vitality points, B23 and B47, can fortify the body
and, with repeated usage over a long period of time, can make a man stronger
sexually,” says Michael Reed Gach, Ph.D., Director of the Acupressure Institute in
Berkeley, California, and author of Acupressure’s Potent Points.

To find the B47 points, measure four finger widths away from the spine at
the waist level. The points are situated on the lower back on the left and right sides
of the spine, in line with the navel. From B47, you can move two finger widths
closer to the spine to find the B23 points. Acupressurists believe that applying
pressure at these points can help relieve pain and speed healing.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 18
Dr. Gach says, “you can use your thumbs or fingers to work the points,
pressing one or both B47 points for one minute, then one or both B23 points for
one minute.” He recommends using “this remedy three times daily adding that if
you have a weak back press these points lightly, and be sure not to press directly on
the disk or vertebrae.”

AROMATHERAPY
“Jasmine is often inhaled for its aphrodisiac
qualities,” writes San Francisco herbalist Jeanne Rose,
Chairperson of the National Association for Holistic
Aromatherapy, in her book, Aromatherapy:
Applications and Inhalations. Because the oil is
expensive, Rose suggests using it in a candle diffuser to
make it last longer. It can also be inhaled from a
handkerchief or applied directly to the body, she says.

As soon as a person hears, “It’s good for you,” they begin to expect nothing
short of pain or some intense level of suffering. Anyone who is about to try
aromatherapy probably won’t expect a lavender-scented bath or hot tea that tastes
like peppermint candy.
However, this is the basis of aromatherapy. These fragrant, pleasurable
treatments are typical and represent a system of caring for the body with botanical
oils. They can be added to a bath or massaged into the skin, inhaled directly or
diffused to scent an entire room. These natural aromatic oils have
been used for nearly a thousand years to relieve pain, care for the skin,
alleviate tension and fatigue and invigorate the entire body.

Although aromatherapy enjoyed popularity in Europe for many years,

Americans didn’t come on board until the late 1980s. Top-selling cosmetic
companies such as Estée Lauder and the Body Shop eventually discovered essential
oils.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 19
Today’s generation feel the need to take their health into their own hands.
Anyone looking for ways to help themselves naturally without side effects should
consider aromatherapy.

How Aromatherapy Works

Although essential oils work on the body on several different levels, the most
obvious way is by stimulating the powerful but little understood sense of smell.

Only recently has medical research discovered what practicing

aromatherapists have known for some time that the odors we smell have a
significant impact on the way we feel. Neurologist, psychiatrist and Director of the
Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Center in Chicago, Dr. Alan Hirsch, M.D.,
says, “Smells act directly on the brain, like a drug.”

Scientific studies report the notion that smelling particular odors has a direct
effect on brain activity. “We know from brain wave frequency studies that smelling
lavender increases alpha waves in the back of the head, which are associated with
relaxation.. . . . An odor such as jasmine increases beta waves in the front of the
head, which are associated with a more alert state,” says Dr. Hirsch.

In order to experience the mind-altering power of scent, simply add several

drops of essential oil to your bath or place a couple of drops of essential oil on scent
ring, which sits on a warm light bulb. A longer-lasting way to scent a room is with
an aroma lamp, a porcelain or clay pot in which essential oils are mixed with water
and heated over a candle, or an electric aromatic diffuser, which reduces essential
oils to a fine spray and dispenses the scent throughout the room.

Experts recommend consulting a medically trained aromatherapist before

taking any oils internally. It is advised that you learn about essential oils before
using them, since some aren’t recommended for certain conditions.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 20
Using Aromatherapy
Essential oils have varying prices and qualities. For example, a ½ ounce vial
of lavender oil can cost between $7 to $15, depending on its purity and where it’s
produced.

However, one should keep in mind that essential oils are highly
concentrated. Therefore, a small quantity can last for months with normal use.

Because many applications involve blending essential oils with other

substances, you’ll need to purchase a few glass or hard plastic bottles to store the
mixtures in. Keep in mind that light can damage essential oils. As a result, experts
recommend using tinted glass bottles and storing them in a cool, dark place. Most
of the stores or mail-order companies that sell essential oils usually sell bottles as
well.

Aromatherapy Cautions
With careful research and keen attention to instructions, essential oils are
far less likely to cause side effects than most over-the-counter drugs. However, as
with all things, one should still proceed with caution. Generally, fair individuals or
people with freckled skin are more likely to experience skin irritation from the use
of essential oils.

Aromatic consultant, John Steele, advises all first-time users to perform a

simple skin test to avoid allergic reactions. To perform a skin test, place a drop of
the oil on a cotton swab and apply it to the inside of the wrist or to the inner elbow.
Cover with a bandage and don’t wash the area for 24 hours. If no itching or redness
occurs, the oil should be safe for external use.

AYURVEDA:
Here’s a treatment regimen recommended by Vasant Lad, B.A.M.S., M.S.Sc.,
Director of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, mix one cup of
fresh grape juice with one teaspoon of fresh onion juice and a teaspoon of honey.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 21
Drink this mixture daily, one hour before going to bed, for 45 days. Dr. Lad
says it will help increase sexual energy and sperm count.

A core idea of Ayurveda is that the fundamental energy of life expresses itself
through the three doshas; vata, pitta and kapha. Each person has a different
mixture of doshas; usually, one dosha is predominant, and another is secondary.
Ayurveda says that one of the main ways to keep your doshas balanced is through
diet. If you don’t eat according to your specific dosha, you will create an
imbalanced state of the doshas.

“Men with kapha constitutions should add a pinch of trikatu,” says Dr. Lad.
Kaphas are sensuous, strong, calm, soft-spoken and forgiving. They tend to have
well developed bodies with big but not prominent bones. Hair is plentiful, usually
dark and wavy or curly. Kaphas frequently have oily complexions and large soulful
eyes. Of all of the doshas, kaphas have the most trouble with their weight
proportionate. Vatta people are creative, quick-witted and resourceful. Associated
with the elements of space and air, vatas are active and alert and enjoy being on the
move. Vatas can be quite softhearted and romantic. Pitta people are fiery,
determined, strong-willed and passionate. They are tough-minded, clearheaded,
enthusiastic and ambitious and can be quite successful. Pittas work well under
pressure and can be courageous in emergencies. Out of balance, the pitta temper
can be scary.

Dr. Lad explains that trikatu is an Indian herbal preparation combining

dried ginger, black pepper, and pippali are available from Ayurvedic practitioners
and by mail order. You can also purchase trikatu in some health food stores.

Please do not use this information to diagnose yourself or anyone else. It is

always recommended to consult a certified expert in the field before implementing
any of these techniques.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 22
How to Find an Ayurvedic Practitioner
According to Dr. Lad, there are very few properly trained Ayurvedic
practitioners in the United States. But there has been growing interest in both the
philosophy of Ayurveda and in the practical details of Ayurvedic self-care.

There is however no licensing procedure and no accrediting board for

Ayurvedic practitioners in the United States. Courses in Ayurveda are offered at
various centers in the US, Canada, and Europe, but in the United States, graduates
can only consult with clients, not practice medicine.

“If you interested in exploring Ayurvedic therapies, choose a practitioner

who combines Western medical training with Ayurvedic training or coordinate
Ayurvedic consultations with your regular M.D.,” suggests Scott Gerson, M.D., an
internist in New York City who has studied Ayurveda in India and is an Ayurvedic
consultant.

According to Dr. Gerson, “Modern Western medicine works best when

surgery or some other acute intervention is necessary. Ayurveda may serve better
for the treatment of some chronic conditions and as preventive medicine.” Experts
suggest that this is because Ayurveda treats the causes of health problems, not the
symptoms. Ayurveda can provide simple, effective treatment for chronic problems
such as dizziness, fatigue, digestive complaints, tension headaches, and erectile
dysfunction—problems that tend to frustrate Western medicine.

Ayurveda Daily Routine

If you’re not in the care of an Ayurvedic practitioner but would like to try out
Ayurveda’s health care philosophy, you can start with some simple lifestyle
adjustments that are part of the optimal Ayurvedic routine.

• Some of these include:

• Rising early (by 6am if possible);
• Meditating for at least 20 minutes once or twice each day;

www.NaturallyStiff.com 23
Keeping your diet simple. A vegetarian or modified vegetarian diet is best.
Make lunch a major meal of the day and eat a light dinner early in the evening,
preferably between 5 and 6pm.

Ayurvedic treatments are usually simple involving lifestyle changes that can
be made at once or over a period of time. Most Westerners find it hard to invest the
necessary personal responsibility for changing a lifestyle that causes disease.

Two common Ayurveda treatments are:

Tribulus Terrestris is a natural treatment for erectile dysfunction. Rooted in

Indian culture, Tribulus Terrestris is an Ayurveda practice that has been used as a
tonic and aphrodisiac. Its Sanskrit name, for the flowering plant, is gokshura. It is
being promoted as a testosterone booster used for the purpose of building muscle
and increasing the sex drive.

Another interesting Ayurveda remedy that can be considered is mucuna

pruriens, also known as ‘velvet bean’. It is a climbing shrub with long vines that
reach over 15m. Mucuna increases tissue resiliency and improves coordination. It
can also support healthy testosterone levels, which in turn can lead to increase
muscle mass and strength.

FLOWER REMEDY/ESSENCE THERAPY

“If a visit to your doctor has ruled out physical causes

of impotence, it may have an emotional cause,” says Cynthia
Mervis Watson, M.D., a family physician in Santa Monica,
California, who specializes in homeopathic and herbal
therapies. If a lack of sexual self-confidence is hampering
you, Dr. Watson recommends the essence of Pink Monkey
Flower. “If you’re haunted by past episodes of impotence, the
essence of Pink Monkey Flower may be helpful,” she says.

“Impotence is always traumatic for a man, whether it’s caused by physical or
emotional factors,” according to Dr. Watson. She says men receiving medical
treatment for physically caused impotence can take the Bach flower remedy Star-
of-Bethlehem, which will help them keep balanced emotionally. Flower

How Flower Remedy/Essence Therapy Works

To familiarize you with the effectiveness of flower remedy/essence therapy,
consider when a friend is sick, recovering from surgery, or grieving the death of a
loved one. What is our normal response in such situations? We send flowers!
Because of their vibrant color or fragrances, flowers are believed to have a
therapeutic effect on illness, fatigue, or depressed spirits.

For practitioners of this therapy, the power of flowers is far more than that
of stimulating the senses. Flower remedy/essence therapy is a system of natural
medicine that uses remedies distilled from blooming plants and trees. Flowers are
nature’s gentle tools for treating and preventing disease.

“Many people are uncomfortable with the idea that their attitudes and
emotions create health problems, because it makes them feel as if their illness were
their fault,” says Lynda Hammer, M.D., an Ayurvedic practitioner in Leavenworth,
Washington, who uses the 38 flower remedies.

Co-director of the Flower Essence Society, Patricia Kaminski, says, “It’s not
enough to recognize your physical symptoms; you have to get to know yourself on a
deeper level.”

How exactly flower remedies/essence therapy works is still not known for
certain or fully understood. Some researchers believe they stimulate the brain to
release neurochemicals that alter emotions such as fear, anger and anxiety.
According to researchers, the result is a strengthening of the body’s innate ability to
heal itself.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 25
In addition to the 38 Bach remedies (The founder of Bach remedies is Dr.
Edward Bach, an English physician), there are some practitioners who use the
essences of flower species native to California. Many of them are Native American
cures. These essences are distilled in a similar manner to Dr. Bach’s method and
are prescribed based on the mental and emotional state of the patient.

Remedies/essences are available in some health food stores or may be

ordered directly from the manufacturer. These remedies are sold in a highly
concentrated form. They can be given in one-fourth of a glass of water and sipped
at intervals, usually first thing in the morning, before meals, and at bedtime. Since
only a few drops of the remedy or essence is needed, a 10.5 milliliter bottle can last
three to six months depending on use, and retails for about $8 to $9). Although up
to six remedies can be used at a time, it is recommended that one remedy be used
at a time whenever possible.

Most people who are used to taking prescription drugs and over-the-counter
medication count on quick action. It should be pointed out that using flower
remedies takes patience. Most people see results in 1 to 12 weeks, depending on
each person’s sensitivity and type of emotional difficulty. Herbalist Leslie Kaslof
emphasizes, “The remedies aren’t quick fixes.” He also cautions that for those
conditions or symptoms requiring medical attention, or if symptoms persist, a
qualified health professional should be consulted.

FOOD THERAPY
“You need to keep the arteries to the genitals open, and the way to do that is
with a low- fat, low-cholesterol diet,” says Michael A. Klaper, M.D., a nutritional
medicine specialist in Pompano Beach, Florida, and director of the Institute of
Nutrition Education and Research, an organization based in Manhattan Beach,
California, that teaches doctors about nutrition and its relationship to disease.
“That means a diet centered on plenty of high-fiber fresh fruits and vegetables,
legumes and other low-fat fare,” says Dr. Klaper.

HERBAL THERAPY

Ginkgo
“Supplements of the herb ginkgo, found
in most health food stores, can improve blood
flow to the penile arteries and veins, which may
help reverse impotence,” says herbalist James
Green, Director of the California School of
Herbal Studies in Forestville. He also warns
that this herbal remedy isn’t a quick fix; you’ll
need to take the supplements daily for six to
eight weeks before you see results. Green says
to follow dosage recommendations on the
product label.

Existing research suggests that one of 60 men with impotence due to poor
blood circulation demonstrated a 50 percent success rate after using it for six
months. Further research dictates that ginkgo may be useful for impotence caused
by drugs in the Prozac family as well as other types of medication that treat
depression.

Although gingko is considered safe, it should not be mixed with blood-

thinning drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin), heparin, aspirin, and Trental
(pentoxifylline). If these chemicals are combined, bleeding problems may occur.
Natural blood thinners, such as garlic, phosphatidylserine, and high doses of
vitamin E, should not be combined with ginkgo.

It should also be noted that there have been some case reports of subdural
hematoma, bleeding in the skull, and hyphema, bleeding into the iris chamber, with
the use of ginkgo.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 27
L-Arginine
Found in foods such as meat, dairy products, poultry and fish, L-Arginine is
an amino acid. The human body uses arginine to create nitric oxide, a substance
used to relax the blood vessels. This may have a positive effect on symptoms of
erectile dysfunction.

L-Arginine Caution
Arginine is reported to be safe in moderate doses of 2 to 3g per day, even
though minor digestive discomfort can occur. When the human body is exposed to
high doses of arginine, it may cause the body to produce gastrin, a hormone that
increases stomach acid. Based on this risk, arginine is considered potentially
harmful for individuals with ulcers and people taking drugs that are hard on the
stomach. In addition, arginine could also alter potassium level in the body. This is
even more likely; with individuals suffering from sever liver disease.

With L-Arginine, studies have shown that men with problems achieving an
erection who received either 5g of L-arginine per day experienced improvement in
sexual performance after 6 weeks.

Zinc
Whenever an individual suffers from zinc deficiency, they may suffer from
negative effects on their sexual function. Most human beings suffer from zinc
deficiency.

The typical treatment for impotence dictates that the patient takes 15 to
30mg daily. It is recommended that 1 to 2mg of copper be taken with zinc, since
supplemental zinc interferes with copper absorption.

Zinc Caution
Keep in mind that too much zinc can be toxic to the human body. Therefore,
do not take more that the recommended dosage.

Indian Ginseng (Ashwagandha)
Indian Ginseng is not botanically related to ginseng. However, it is used as a
tonic herb. Indian Ginseng is believed to be capable of strengthening the body. Its
traditional use includes the improvement of sexual capacity. Basically, it is used as
an aphrodisiac.

Some forms of Indian ginseng can cause drowsiness. Hence, be careful not
to combine it with sedating drugs.

It should be noted that this herb is useful for people with impotence caused
by anxiety.

Natural Medicines
While Western medicine has become the norm in many cultures, it is not the
only treatment option. Conventional western medicine, often called allopathic
medicine, is the system of medicine taught at most medical schools and most
pharmaceutical and synthetic medicines are manufactured and marketed according
to the principles of allopathic medicine. Allopathic medicine is also sometimes
called orthodox medicine.

Because most of us in the Western world have grown up in a society in which

allopathic medicine is the prevailing norm, we forget that, only a few decades ago,
homeopathic, herbal and other natural medicines were commonly available – and
freely used even by conventional doctors. While there are often heated debates
about which system of medicine is ‘better’ than the other, many responsible doctors
(whether they are allopathic or not) recognize that both have a role to play in the
treatment program.

Natural medicine has often been frowned on by conventional doctors,

especially by those who did not have sufficient knowledge of these medicines.
However, it is encouraging to note that some medical schools are now beginning to
re-introduce it into their course work, thereby providing doctors with a wider range

www.NaturallyStiff.com 29
of treatment options from which to choose. In many countries, especially in
Europe, India and China, natural and homeopathic medicines are commonly
prescribed by conventional doctors and represent a significant part of the total
annual drug sales.

Naturopathy is a branch of medicine (just as allopathy is a branch of

medicine) which operates according to the underlying philosophy that the body has
an innate capacity to heal itself. While natural medicines are often called
‘alternative’ or ‘complimentary’ medicines, they are, in fact, a unique and
independent form of medicine in their own right, well able to treat a variety of
conditions. Perhaps the term ‘holistic’ medicine is more apt, given the broad range
of treatment options and approaches which are to be found within the practice of
natural medicine, which encompasses many different disciplines, including
herbalism, homeopathy, iridology, osteopathy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage
techniques, aromatherapy, acupuncture and many, many more. Most naturopaths
will use a variety of treatment modalities in order to treat their patients in a holistic
way to support health, relieve symptoms and prevent future disease.

In fact, even the World Health Organization defines health as being "... more
than simply the absence of illness. It is the active state of physical, emotional,
mental and social well-being." This is a wonderfully clear description of holistic or
natural medicine, which strives to support health (thereby relieving or preventing
symptoms), rather than simply eliminating disease.

Although allopathic medicine certainly has a role to play and has made a
tremendous contribution to medical science during the past century, there is a
growing perception that it is not the only answer and that, in many cases, holistic
medicine can accomplish just as much, if not more – without the risk of side effects,
addiction and sacrifice to health so commonly associated with pharmaceutical
drugs.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 30
Contrary to common perception, and provided that they are manufactured in
the correct way, natural medicines can work quickly and safely to promote healing.
In many cases, they can succeed where pharmaceutical drugs have failed. Despite
frequent reports that they are ‘unproven’ and ‘untested’, the opposite is true.
Natural medicines have a long history of usage and there is a wealth of empirical
evidence to support their effectiveness and safety. In addition, active clinical
research is carried out by many academic hospitals and universities to support the
extensive traditional and empirical evidence behind natural medicines.

It is also important to know that, like any medicine, herbal and homeopathic
medicines must be manufactured in the correct way, following acceptable
procedures and manufacturing methods to ensure maximum effectiveness and
safety. Due to the recent rise in popularity of natural remedies, many companies
have sprung up to take advantage of the market. Unfortunately not all of them are
equipped to manufacture to the correct standards, often resulting in a flood of
inferior (and sometimes even unsafe) remedies onto the market – and giving
natural remedies a bad name. Even some pharmaceutical companies have rushed
to claim their market share by producing so-called ‘standardized’ extracts of herbs
and offering these as superior to the tried and tested methods of naturopathic
manufacturing.

Nothing could be further from the truth. While ‘standardized’ extracts may
offer benefit of easy consistency of dosage (and cheaper more efficient production
lines), they have grave disadvantages. These include an increase in side effects as
the medicines produced in this manner lose the natural protective properties of the
herbs. In some cases, these side effects have proved fatal – as was seen in the liver
toxicity associated with standardized extracts of kava kava, a herb previously safely
used for generations without any known side effects.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 31
Most naturopaths recommend what is called the Full Spectrum Method of
extraction – which retains the benefits of ALL the active ingredients within the herb
as opposed to isolating only one – thereby providing a more complete treatment as
well as superior protection against side effects.

Whatever your choice, always choose wisely. Research what is best for you. If
you have a chronic or life threatening condition, don’t make changes without first
discussing them with your doctor in order that your condition may be monitored.
Well informed and supportive practitioners will support patients who want to take
responsibility for their own health.

In the treatment of erectile dysfunction, the following herbal and

homeopathic remedies are often used as part of the treatment plan.

Ikawe contains the following therapeutic herbs in convenient and fast-acting

drop format:

Epimedium grandiflorum, also known as Horny Goats Weed, is believed to

help promote sexual desire and has been regarded for years in China and Japan as a
‘natural sexual stimulator’! It is believed to promote healthy seminal emissions and
encourage systemic harmony of the prostate gland and seminal vesicles.
Epimedium species have long been used as sexual tonics in Chinese herbal
medicine to encourage sexual performance and healthy testosterone production
thus promoting sexual energy, and overall well-being. (Fukai T, Nomura T. “Seven
prenylated flavonol glycosides from two Epimedium species”. Phytochemistry.
1998;27:259-266). (Kessenich CR, Cichon MJ. “Hormonal decline in elderly men
and male menopause”. Geriatric Nursing. 2001; 22:24-28.)

Tribulus terristis has been studied for its ability to promote muscle health
and strength and general prowess in the male body. (Rogerson S, Riches CJ,
Jennings C, Weatherby RP, Meir RA, Marshall-Gradisnik SM. Abstract “The effect
of five weeks of Tribulus terrestris supplementation on muscle strength and body
composition during preseason training in elite rugby league players”. J Strength
Cond Res. 2007 May;21(2):348-53. PMID: 17530942).

www.NaturallyStiff.com 33
Animal studies have investigated the supporting effect of an extract of this
herb on sexual desire. (Gauthaman K, Adaikan PG, Prasad RN. Abstract
“Aphrodisiac properties of Tribulus Terrestris extract (Protodioscin) in normal and
castrated rats”. Life Sci. 2002 Aug 9;71(12):1385-96. PMID: 12127159).

Eleutherococcus senticosis, also known as Siberian ginseng, is one of the

most important active ingredients in Siberian or Oriental Ginseng is the
ginsenosides, which greatly promote healthy blood flow to the brain and
peripherals, including the penis. In oriental medicine, Ginseng is highly respected
and prized as a herb which promotes male or 'yang' energy, aiding circulation,
supporting natural vitality and acting as an overall systemic supporter.

It can combat stress and is a supportive tonic for healthy adrenal hormones.
In a recent study Siberian ginseng was shown to support stamina and fitness.
(Szolomicki J, Samochowiec L, Wojcicki J, Drozdzik M, Szolomicki S. “The
influence of active components of Eleutherococcus senticosus on cellular defence
and physical fitness in man”. Phytother Res. 2000 Feb; 14(1): 30-5). (Hartz AJ,
Bentler S, Noyes R, et al. “Randomized controlled trial of Siberian ginseng for
chronic fatigue”. Psychol Med . 2004;34(1):51-61).

In addition, animal studies lend growing support for the use of ginseng in
lessening sexual dysfunction and studies provide increasing evidence for a role of
ginsenoside action utilizing nitric oxide. [The effects of ginseng on the corpus
cavernosum (one of two parallel columns of erectile tissue forming the dorsal part
of the body of the penis) appear to be mediated by the release and/or modification
of release of nitric oxide from endothelial cells and perivascular nerves]. (Murphy
LL, Lee TJ. “Ginseng, sex behavior, and nitric oxide”. Department of Physiology,
Southern Illinois University, School of Medicine, Carbondale, Illinois 62901, USA.
2002 May; 962:372-7 PMID: 12076988).

www.NaturallyStiff.com 34
Sabal serrulata, also known as Saw Palmetto, has long been utilized by the
Seminole Indians as a tonic to promote strength. Extracts from the fruit of this
short, scrubby palm have been used historically to address urogenital health. Many
modern clinical trials corroborate the ability of saw palmetto extract (SPE) to lessen
the signs and symptoms of prostate conditions, for which it is a first-line treatment
in much of Europe. (Buck A. Phytotherapy for the prostate. Br J Urol. 1996; 78:325-
336). (Lowe F, Ku J. Phytotherapy in treatment of BPH: a critical review. Urology.
1996; 48:12-20). Saw palmetto enhances the actions of other herbs - thus, it helps
support the prostate gland's healthy hormone balance necessary for optimal sexual
function. (Murray, M, "Extract of serenoa repens in the treatment of benign
prostatic hyperplasia", Phyto-Pharmica Review, vol 1, p. 5, August 1988).

Smilax ornate, also known as Sarsaparilla, contains steroidal saparins which

are thought to mimic the action of some human hormones. It is used as a
supportive tonic to the male reproductive system and is thought to promote healthy
routine production of testosterone and progesterone.

Glycorrhyza glabra, also known as Liquorice, originates in the

Mediterranean and the Middle East and has many uses, including being a
supportive tonic for the adrenal cortex. It promotes the natural production of
hormones such as hydrocortisone that has steroidal anti-inflammatory agents.

Kola vera, also known as Kola nut, has active constituents of this herb which
include tannins, proteins, additional phenolics and anthrocyanin (that are likely to
provide antioxidant activity). In addition, Kola vera contains a unique constellation
of Xanthines that are regarded as utilized elements to lessen common fatigue and
support the body’s natural ability to rejuvenate and replenish it’s routine energy
levels.

Epimedium Grandiflorum extract is also commonly known as ‘horny goat

weed’. It has been over 2000 years since horny goat weed has been used in
reproductive beverages for boosting the sex drive and treating erectile dysfunction.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 35
Studies report this herb as being a time tested aphrodisiac. Horny goat weed
improves energy and reduces stress level when they are elevated. Remember that
high stress levels causes fatigue and depresses the sex drive.

This herb can also restore low levels of testosterone and thyroid, resulting in
an improved sex drive.

A noteworthy fact about the horny goat weed is that it contains a flavnoid,
among others, called icarin. Icarin is the same ingredient found in prescription
drugs such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.

Lepidium Meyenii is also known as Maca Root. This root has a wide range of
medicinal benefits. It is mostly used with infertility, erectile dysfunction, and
increasing sexual activity. It is offered in a herbal male sexual supplement called
Vuka Nkuzi.

HOMEOPATHY
“After a thorough medical examination and diagnosis, try taking one of these
remedies two or three times a day until improvement occurs,” says Chris Meletis,
N.D., a naturopathic physician and Medicinary Director at the National College of
Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon.

Agnus castus can be helpful for symptoms of a cold and relaxed penis and for
lack of sexual desire, especially if accompanies by a fear of death and dilated pupils,
says Dr. Meletis. If you are apprehensive and cannot have an erection or if
erections lead to premature ejaculation, Dr. Meletis recommends Lycopodium.
“Try Argentum nitricum, if your erection fails when attempting intercourse, if
intercourse is painful and if your symptoms are made worse at night, from warmth
and when you eat sweets.” All of these remedies are available in health food stores.

IMAGERY
“Conquering impotence may be as simple as conquering an ogre,” writes
Gerald Epstein, M.D., a New York City psychiatrist and author of Healing
Visualizations. Here’s how:

Imagine yourself descending into a valley. There you’re confronted by a

monster or an ogre. Fortunately, you have everything you need to defeat this beast.
Fight the monster, and when you are triumphant and the monster is dead, skin it.
Carry the skin with you and climb to the top of the valley. There you meet your
loved one. Take her hand, walk with her to a tree and lie behind it. Picture
the two of you surrounded by a cocoon of blue light and embrace.

Dr Epstein suggests practicing this technique for five to seven minutes once
a week, on the same morning each week, for three weeks.

REFLEXOLOGY
“Pay special attention to the diaphragm reflex as well as the spine,
reproductive system and pituitary, parathyroid, thyroid and adrenal gland reflexes
on your feet,” says reflexologist Dwight Byers, author of Better Health with Foot
Reflexology.

How to Work the Points

According to Mr. Byers, Reflexology is a complex, thorough system.
Reflexology is not the same as just rubbing your feet all over. The idea is that
pressure applied to the feet and hands promote a beneficial response throughout
the body, providing a break from stress.

Professional reflexologists say that they can often assess when something is
out of balance in the body from your feet. A tender spot on the feet demonstrates
that the individual may have a problem in the corresponding part of the body.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 37
It should be kept in mind that reflexologists do not diagnose illnesses or
treat specific diseases. They do however concentrate their attention on the sore
spots of the feet.

According to mounting evidence, whatever is behind reflexology works.

Professional reflexologists insist that reflexology works best as prevention. It helps
keep your body running correctly by improving blood circulation, clearing out
impurities, balancing your system, and giving you more energy.

Your Reflexology Session

The basics of reflexology are very easy to
pick up.
If you have a few thumb and finger
techniques and a guide map, you can start
working on your own feet, or your partner’s feet
immediately.

The thumb walk is the most common technique.

You use the outside edge of your thumb to take small “bites” of the hand or
foot, applying gently, steady pressure as you go. The finger walk is similar to the
thumb walk, except that you use the edge of your index finger to take the bites on
the hands or foot. The hook and back up technique puts steady pressure on a single
point. You place your thumb on the reflex point, then pull back slightly to “grab”
the point. Rotation on a point also puts pressure on a single point and is better to
use when you encounter a tender area. Additionally, a golf ball may be used to
apply pressure to small points, usually on the hand.

Reflexology’s foundation is built on pressure.

The techniques depend on how large the area is and how much pressure is
needed to make tender spots hurt but feel good. Reflexology should be considered
an exercise and be integrated into your daily routine.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 38
If you are using reflexology to deal with specific problems, sessions should
be at least 30 minutes of attention to the areas of concern.

It is recommended that each session start with a few minutes of relaxation

techniques, such as pressing between the toes, across the soles and over the tops of
the feet. On your hands, press between the fingers and cross the palms. Do
anything you like that loosens up your hands and feet.

Each session’s starting point is at the top of the left foot, then work down the
foot as you apply pressure to tender spots and to specific areas. Afterwards, work
your foot a second time continuing to apply pressure to tender spots and specific
areas. Press each area at least four or five times before moving on. Repeat on the
right foot. Use the same general patterns for your hands.

The basic concept is that you apply pressure until each spot hurts but feels
good.
However, one should note that if an area feels as though it’s bruised or
injured when you press it, you are pressing too hard. How hard you press will
depend on the area you are working on. For instance, if an area of the hand or foot
is bony, your pressure should be lighter, fleshier areas can withstand more
pressure, like the fleshy-callused soles of your feet. The pressure applied should
compliment each individual’s hand and feet sensitivity.

RELAXATION AND MEDITATION

Biofeedback:
Biofeedback aids in the relief of varied conditions. In addition to impotence,
some of the conditions improved with this technique are stuttering, muscle spasms,
tooth grinding and epilepsy. Mental health professionals say it also works well in
conjunction with other relaxation techniques.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 39
It is recommended that biofeedback be administered through professional
care. The biofeedback process attaches electrodes to the human body. These
electrodes monitor different body functions. The slightest change in any of these
electrodes can be detected instantly by the biofeedback machine and transforms the
change into a signal that humans can see or hear. Professionals use this feedback
to regulate bodily functions so that you feel more relaxed.

Thermal Biofeedback at Home

Fortunately, there is an economical approach to the biofeedback technique.
This cheap and easy form of biofeedback can be practiced at home and is called
thermal biofeedback. It requires a thermometer, your hands, and 15 minutes of
your time.

“Daily practice of thermal biofeedback can often help overcome impotence

because it reduces anxiety and keeps your blood vessels open,” says Steven Fahrion,
Ph.D., Director of Research at the Life Sciences Institute of Mind-Body and Health
in Topeka, Kansas.

Dr. Fahrion says, “Many people haven’t heard of it, although it has been used
in hospitals and clinics to treat stress-related disorders such as high blood pressure
for more than 20 years. Most people can learn to do it in a single session.”

Thermal feedback was developed in the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas.

According to this clinic, thermal biofeedback is based on the premise that when a
person is under stress, the body restricts blood flow to the extremities, such as the
hands and feet, so they are colder than the rest of the body. But, if you warm your
hands, blood flow increases; stress hormones diminish; muscles relax; and you’ll
feel less tense.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 40
Sit in a comfortable chair and wrap your hands around a
thermometer so that your fingertips are touching. Rest your hands in your lap and
focus your mind on any sensation that you feel in your fingers. You may feel a
tingling or pulsing in your fingertips. This is a sign that your hands are warming.
Every so often, look at the thermometer with the intention to warm, but don’t
strive to raise your hand temperature. This will occur naturally. Refocus your
attention on your hands when you get distracted.

Dollemore, Doug, et al., New Choices in Natural Healing, Pennsylvania:

Rodale Press, Inc., 1995:

The principle behind relaxation and meditation is that peace of mind heals.
Modern scientific evidence is only now proving the truth of this ancient therapeutic
process. Dr. Fahrion says, “Relaxation and meditation can have a very powerful
effect on the body. It can help you cope with all kinds of stress-related problems,
including migraines, peptic ulcers, and anxiety. So I think that people who develop
and retain peace of mind do experience mental and physical healing.”

Researchers report that relaxation and mediation techniques can boost

immunity, short- circuit anger, curb smoking and relieve insomnia, back pain, high
blood pressure, motion sickness, impotence, menopause and irritable bowel
syndrome. With professional care, these techniques can also help control diseases,
such as diabetes, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, panic attacks, phobias and
depression.

Medical professionals report that excessive amounts of stress can adversely

affect almost every part of your body. Chronic stress, for instance, elevates blood
pressure, total blood cholesterol, and blood platelet counts. All of these lead to
atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and heart attack. Available statistics
indicate that eight of ten people seen by primary care physicians have some stress-
related symptoms.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 41
Meditation and relaxation is more like a mental rest stop. These mental rest
stops influence the relaxation response. The relaxation response is a
physiological state that has been shown to lessen feelings of stress and
anxiety. The relaxation response reduces muscle tension, lowers heart rate, blood
pressure, metabolism and breathing and sparks tranquil feelings… says Eileen
Stuart, R.N., Director of Cardiovascular Programs at the Mind-Body Medical
Institute, a behavioral medicine clinic at Deaconess Hospital in Boston.

“The relaxation response blunts the release of adrenaline, catecholamines

and other stress hormones that trigger the fight-or-flight response,” Stuart says.
This is important because an overdose of stress hormones can suppress the
immune system and elevate blood cholesterol levels.

Dr. Fahrion says, “This type of deep relaxation is associated with healing in
many different ways. When you get very deeply relaxed, for example, the body
releases growth hormones that help repair and restore damaged tissue.” Before you
begin, however, please note that these techniques will not prevent stress from
occasionally disrupting your life.

Five Relaxation Enhancers:

Relaxation and meditation techniques can do wonders for your physical and
mental health. The following five processes, provided in New Choices in Natural
Healing by Doug Dollemore, et al., will allow you to enhance your sense of inner
peace and balance:

1. Stomp out the cigarettes and cigars: In spite of the obvious health risk
for heart disease and lung cancer, smoking contributes to the release of stress
hormones in the body. Hence the action of quitting is the most important
thing you can do to feel less stressed and more relaxed.
2. Moderate the caffeine: Caffeine can trigger the fight-or- flight
response to stress, so avoid coffee, tea, cola, chocolate and other foods and
beverages containing caffeine. This effect occurs because caffeine is a
stimulant.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 42
3. Curb the Carbs: Commit yourself to eating grains, vegetables and
fruits loaded with complex carbohydrates. These carbohydrates trigger
the release of hormones that will help you relax. Some carbohydrates
that you can integrate into your diet are spaghetti, baked beans and apples.
4. Generate a sweat: As always, regular exercise remains a fundamental
part of any relaxation program. It can lower anxiety, fend off depression,
and help improve an individual’s self-esteem. For starters, try walking at
least 15 to 20 minutes a day.
5. Commit to a daily chuckle: There is a chemical in the brain that
produces a feeling of euphoria. This chemical is called endorphins. A
good laugh is believed to trigger the release of endorphins. It also
suppresses the production of cortisol, a hormone released when
you’re under stress that indirectly raises blood pressure by causing your
body to retain salt. Therefore, make sure humor is a part of your every day
life.

“This type of deep relaxation is associated with healing in many different

ways,” Dr. Fahrion says. “When you get very deeply relaxed, for example, the
physical body releases growth hormones that help repair and restore damaged
tissue.”

VITAMIN AND MINERAL THERAPY

“Vitamin A deficiency has been the cause
of impotence in some men,” says Elson Haas,
M.D., Director of the Preventive Medical Center
of Mann in San Rafael, California, and author of
Staying Healthy with Nutrition. Although
vitamin A can be toxic in large doses, Dr. Haas
says that most men can safely take between
10,000 and 25,000 international units daily without dangerous side effects.
However, he recommends talking over possible supplementation with your doctor
before beginning self-treatment.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 43
There are hundreds of nutrient compounds called phytochemicals. Many of
these nutrient compounds have beneficial effects on health. Some researchers have
attempted to ward off cancer with the use of these phytochemicals in vegetables.

Problems arise from the fact that many nutrients in our daily diet are
available in low amounts. Vitamins and mineral supplements address this problem
nicely.

Richard Anderson, Ph.D., lead scientist for the nutrient requirements and
functions laboratory at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrient
Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland, says, “There is overwhelming evidence
that supplements have beneficial effects on a person’s health, because they offer
much higher doses of key nutrients than you find in food—sometimes amounts that
you could never get from diet alone.”

A Little History
Foods containing nutrients of vitamin and minerals have been used as
therapy for thousands of years. According the ancient Egyptians, a lack of vitamin
A caused night blindness. Hence, they ate the livers of roosters and oxen to cure
night blindness, and sea sponge was eaten as a natural source of iodine. This was
eaten to treat goiters.

Around 1906, it became evident that fat, protein and carbohydrates, the
main food source of those times, were found to be insufficient to support life.
Acknowledging that something else was needed, scientist went to work isolating the
nutrient compounds in foods. By 1912, the term vitamine was coined (for “vital
amine;” amine being a type of chemical structure; the e was dropped some years
later.

From 1906 through the 1940s, a tremendous amount of research was done
on vitamins and supplements. Vitamins were named alphabetically in the order
that they were discovered. The first of these vitamins was called A, and so on.

Vitamins are organic compounds. This means that each vitamin contains
carbon, which is found only in living things. Minerals are simpler non-organic
compounds and are generally found in smaller quantities in foods. Dr. Michael
Janson, M.D., director of the Center of Preventive Medicine in Barnstable,
Massachusetts and an officer of the American College for Advancement in
Medicine, says, “Along with essential fatty acidsand amino acids, vitamins and
minerals are among the almost 50 known essential nutrients we need for a healthy
life.”

Four of those vitamins—A, D, E and K—are fat-soluble, meaning that excess

amounts may be stored in the body. Vitamin C and the eight B vitamins, are water-
soluble. Water-soluble means that any excess amounts are simply urinated away.

After the initial research into vitamins, minerals were identified. The
minerals are classified into two categories: major minerals, or macronutrients,
such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, which are found in relatively high
concentrations in food; and trace minerals, or micronutrients, such chromium,
copper, iron and zinc, which are usually found only in tiny amounts.

All of these nutrients are crucial to the preservation of life. Whether in the
form of food or vitamin and mineral supplements, these play a role in cell building
and in the health of every organ in your body as well as of your bones, immunity
and nervous system.

Although they don’t supply energy, an individual can get that from
carbohydrates, protein and fat, they do release energy from food so that your body
can use it.

According to Dr. Janson, the most important fact to note about vitamins and
minerals, is that every cell in your body needs every vitamin; however not every cell
utilizes them in the same way or needs the same amounts. Because of that, it is
hard to say which vitamins or minerals are most important.

Power Vitamins and Minerals

A Radical Response with Vitamins

The power punchers of vitamins and minerals, at least when it comes to

fending off today’s most common health concerns, are the antioxidants. Some
examples of antioxidants are vitamins C and E and beta-carotene, a form of vitamin
A. It is believed that when large enough doses are taken, these vitamins offer
protection against 60 age- related afflictions, from cancer and cataracts to heart
disease and high cholesterol.

How Do They Work?

They protect by stopping toxic molecules called free radicals. Radiation,
cigarette smoke, car exhaust, and other pollutants cause free radicals. Free radicals
eat away a healthy cell and turn the cells defective. This behavior is similar to the
way cancer cells run amok in the human body. Over a period of time, the damage
done by free radicals could develop into cancer; change innocuous cholesterol into
a sticky substance that blocks arteries and increases the natural aging process and
the diseases that aging brings.

How to Make It Benefit You the Most

At different stages in your life, you will need different kinds of vitamins and
minerals. This is usually because of the way your body changes how it absorbs
nutrients. For example, 70 percent of the calcium consumed by a baby is absorbed,
while adults absorb only about 30 percent. This is the exact reason why
supplements become even more significant as you age.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 48
Although you may manage to stay active, benefits can still be derived from
supplements. “Moderate exercise enhances immunity, but if you’re running more
than 30 miles a week or doing a lot of other type of exercise, you can actually hurt
immunity and be more prone to viruses,” says Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., Founder
and President of the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. His recommendation for
those individuals who exercise a lot is to take vitamin supplements rich in
antioxidants. The recommended dosage is 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C, 400
international units (IU) of vitamin E in the natural alpha- tocopherol form and 15
milligrams (25,000 IU) of beta-carotene each day.

In spite of the fact that antioxidants receive most of the attention in the
media, they are not the only ones packing super powers. “There is a lot of exciting
research being done with minerals right now,” says Dr. Anderson.

Minerals’ biggest benefits come in dosages an individual cannot find through

food alone. An example of this is the trace mineral, chromium. According to Dr.
Anderson, chromium has been shown to reduce risk factors for diabetes and
cardiovascular disease in some people. He says, “It improves glucose and insulin
and lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, a form of blood fat that has been linked to
an increased risk of heart disease. Give someone the recommended 50 micrograms,
and he’ll get along fine. But if you want protection against heart disease, you need
400 micrograms. And research shows that copper and magnesium can protect
against heart disease—but only in amounts that you rarely get from food.”

Other experts acknowledge that zinc may be even more important than
antioxidants for warding off invading infections and keeping the immune system
strong. In fact, in addition to impotence, one of the hottest remedies for fighting
colds is a zinc gluconate lozenge; they kill many of the germs that cause sore throat
and other symptoms associated with the common cold. Pretty powerful stuff!

www.NaturallyStiff.com 49
Zinc’s RDA is 15 milligrams for men, but most people get between 8 and 10
milligrams. What should they get? Amanda Prasad, M.D. Ph.D., professor of
medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit and a leading expert on zinc, says,
“I’d say about 30 milligrams a day—more if they’re having a specific skin problem
or another condition.

As long as it is properly balanced with 2 to 3 milligrams of copper.” This is

because zinc and copper interfere with each other’s absorption. Too much of one
can cause a deficiency of the other. Therefore, they should always supplement each
other.
Selenium is a mineral. It has antioxidant qualities that may also reinforce
the body’s immunity. Research indicates that it protects against heart disease and
cancer, alleviates symptoms of arthritis, and can even improve mood. The RDA is
70 micrograms for men. Dr. Janson recommends taking up to six times that
amount each day to reap these rewards.

Victory with Vital Vitamins

Another nutrient essential to strong immunity is vitamin B6. This vitamin

becomes even more important as you age. Elderly people seem to metabolize it less
effectively than younger people. This could lead to a B6 deficiency. This deficiency
may hurt immunity.
It is recommended that 50 to 100 milligrams of vitamin B6 be taken daily.

What is the bottom line? Regardless of an individual’s age, gender, lifestyle

or exercise habits, experts believe that just about every one can benefit from
supplementing their diets with vitamins and minerals. One should note that
supplements are only part of a total health plan. They are not magic pills. They do
not make up for bad habits. However, they do make a big difference.

YOGA
A yoga pose called “the knee squeeze may fight against impotence,”
according to Alice Christensen, Founder and Executive Director of the American
Yoga Association. She recommends the combination of this exercise with two
inverted yoga poses. These poses are the easy bridge and the cobra. These should
be incorporated into a daily routine that should also include breathing exercises
and meditation. She also recommends several meditation breaks throughout the
day of no more than five to ten minutes at a time.

The Knee Squeeze Pose

Lie face up on the floor or a mat. Your hands should be at your sides, and
your toes should be slightly pointed. Inhale slowly and fully as you raise your right
knee to your chest. Grab the knee with both arms and hold it to your chest for a few
seconds. Then begin to exhale as you straighten your knee and lower it slowly to
the floor. Repeat with the left leg. Do this a total of three times, alternating legs.

Next, breathe in completely, then lift both knees to your chest at the same
time. Wrap your arms around both legs and hold for a few seconds, then breathe
out and lower your legs.

Expert version: After a few weeks, you can also raise your head and place
your forehead between your knees as far as possible.

Caution: If you find pain in your lower back, try bending your legs. Raise
your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. Hold this position for 30 seconds
to several minutes, following the instructions above.

The Easy Bridge Pose

Lie on the floor or a mat. Your knees should be bent. Place your feet flat on
the floor and as close to your buttocks as possible. Your hands should be at your
sides, with palms down.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 51
Breathe out slowly as you relax your head, neck and shoulders. As you start
to breathe in, lift your hips off the floor slowly. Arch your back, with your shoulders
and neck remaining on the floor. Hold this position for one or two breaths. Then
slowly lower your hips to the floor as you exhale. Repeat two more times.

Expert version: Grab your ankles with your hands and proceed as described
above.

Cobra Pose
Lie facedown with your forehead
touching the floor. Your toes should be
pointed, with the tops of your toes
touching the floor.
Place your hands, palms down, on
the floor next to your armpits.

Lift your head slowly off the floor as you begin to take a breath. Be sure to
look straight up. Now lift your chest and stomach off the floor. Use the muscles of
the back to lift, curling your spine.

Expert version: Grab your ankles with your hands and proceed as described
above.

Caution: Men should not attempt this pose if they have open wounds in the
abdominal region or if they have undergone abdominal or pelvic surgery within the
past several weeks.

Breathing Exercises
Daily yoga routines come in four parts: breathing, relaxation, meditation
and poses. Together, they relax the body and focus and clear the mind. Yoga gives
you more energy and vigor that is complimented by a sense of inner contentment
and peace.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 52
The average yoga routine should last at least a half-hour and should begin
with breathing. Yoga experts recommend that any routine be at least a half-hour
and starts with breathing exercises. Alice Christensen, founder and executive
director of the American Yoga Association, reports that deep breaths deliver energy
into your body; provides you with essential oxygen; and calms your muscles and
organs.

On average, people do the complete opposite. We usually take very shallow

breaths. These shallow breaths do not allow our lungs to expand or soak up oxygen.
The proper technique is using the diaphragm, which is the thin muscle underneath
your lungs. When this thin muscle flexes, the lower lobes of your lungs are pulled
down and opens. This process allows more air inside your lungs. Alice Christensen
calls this type of breathing the belly breath. It was so named because your belly
expands as air enters the lungs, not your chest.

Described simply, the belly breath starts by sitting comfortably in a chair or

on the floor.

If you chose to sit on the floor, ensure that form cushions are available. Sit
on one or more firm cushions so that your hips tilt slightly forward. This method
reduces the strain on your lower back. Put one hand on your stomach. Now,
breathe out slowly through your nose, contracting your stomach muscles and
lightly pushing on your stomach. To breathe in, relax your stomach muscles, arch
your back slightly and let the air flow in your nose. You should feel your hand move
from your belly.

According to Christensen, this is the way to breathe all of the time. “Chest
breathing comes from stress; it’s a reaction to stress. But breathing from the belly
is a natural way to relax and spread more oxygen to your entire body.”

www.NaturallyStiff.com 53
In yoga, there are many advanced breathing techniques. Some are designed
to clear the sinuses. Some are used in conjunction with medication. Still others are
used to strengthen stomach and chest muscles. The best overall stress reducer is
called the complete breath. Experts say this is the one you should practice for a few
minutes each day as part of your yoga routine.

The complete breath starts like the belly breath. The difference is your
hands are in a different position. Place them on either side of your lower rib cage,
with your fingers touching slightly. Now, begin breathing from your stomach. Let
the air fill your lower lungs. Then, let the breath begin to fill the lower part of your
chest. Try to make your ribs expand sideways as your lungs fill. You should feel
your fingers spreading apart as your chest expands. Keep drawing in more air,
working towards the top of your lungs. Straighten your shoulders and arch your
back, letting the air completely fill up your lungs. As a caution, do remember not to
breathe so deeply that you feel straining in your stomach or chest muscles.

The complete inhalation should last for ten seconds. The length of your
exhalation should be the same. To help control your breath better, always breathe
through your nose. Do the complete breath for at least five minutes at the start of
your yoga routine.

This breathing technique is also quite effective during the day when you are
experiencing high stress.

Now for Your Mind…

As your breathing techniques concentrate on your physical body, your mind
must now be considered and integrated in your yoga routine. If your mind is
racing, worried about clients at work, leaky pipes at home or blow-ups with your
spouse, your mind is not relaxed. It is based on this very reason why yoga experts
say an individual needs to set aside a few minutes in every day to think about
absolutely nothing.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 54
Mediation helps us focus on what is important, and lets us explore ourselves.
Experts in yoga consider this process very healing. Relaxation gently pulls you into
mediation. According to yoga instructor Lilias Folan, “Meditation is something you
do by yourself without children or pets in the room. No telephones. Eventually,
you’ll be able to stay centered and calm when there are distractions. And when you
get off base, you’ll know how to return to the center through the use of your
breathing and relaxation techniques.”

In advanced meditation, individuals usually sit upright in one of several

poses. However, the American Yoga Association offers a simple meditation
program that you can do on your back in a position called the corpse pose. The
association’s founder and executive director says this position allows you to relax
completely, since there’s no pressure on any of your limbs.

Corpse Pose
Lie on your back on either the floor or a mat. Your arms should be at your
sides, with the palms of your hands facing up. Your legs should be straight, with
your feet in a relaxed position. Relax all of your muscles, close your eyes and hold
the pose for 30 seconds to several minutes, until your muscles completely relax.
Breathe deeply and scan your body to feel any tension. If you feel tension,
concentrate on the area and relax the muscles.

Caution: If you feel pain in your lower back, try bending your legs. Raise
your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. Hold this position for 30 seconds
to several minutes, following the instructions above.

Considering Yoga?
Yoga experts recommend taking a group class. Classes are easy to locate.
Most fitness clubs, YM/YWCA, and community centers in America offer yoga. In
addition, there are hundreds of yoga centers all over America. When you find a
suitable facility, you only need to decide whether you want short or long-term
instruction. If the group thing isn’t for you, you can opt for a home video purchase.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 55
The majority of the yoga classes being offered focus on hatha yoga. Hatha
yoga concentrates on familiar yoga poses along with breathing and mediation.
With this type of yoga, instructors stress different things. One teacher may place
more emphasis on demanding poses, while others concentrate on relaxation and
contemplation.

If you are using yoga for therapeutic reasons, it is important that you join a
qualified yoga teacher, class or do a private consultation before attempting to
perform a routine on your own. Unfortunately, yoga has no standard certification
process or training guidelines. Therefore, you should ask a lot of questions before
settling on an instructor.

Home Meditation
Find a dimly lit, warm room with no drafts. Place a mat or blanket on the
floor and lie on it face up. Do not use a pillow unless your doctor has advised you
that you need to keep your head raised for medical reasons. Now spend about five
minutes unwinding. Focus your mind on the different parts of your body.
Concentrate on feeling them release their tension. Begin with the face, and then
move to the shoulders, arms, hands, and chest.

When you reach your chest, remember to focus on your heart and lungs.
Notice how much slower your breathing becomes. Now, move to your stomach and
other organs in your stomach. Finally, work down to your hips, legs and feet.
Christensen now suggests going back to your face to make sure that it is still calm
and relaxed.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 56
Once you have completed this mental scan of your body, it is time to begin
mediation. Sometimes it helps to start your meditation session by chanting a
mantra, a phrase that focuses your attention. Christensen suggests the word om,
pronounced “ohm.” Repeat this silently for about a minute to help draw attention
from your body to your mind.

Now lie quietly. Thoughts will enter your mind, note them and don’t dwell
on them. Try to move your thoughts to the edge of your mind, but don’t force them.
Just let them drift away.

You are trying to find stillness. Your objective is to get your mind quiet,
concentrating, and focused. You may not reach this point the first time you attempt
to meditate.

Further, when you do reach this point, you may not stay there long. Do not
let this upset you. Christensen says, “If you can get one to two minutes of absolute
silence, give yourself an A.”

Meditate for ten minutes or more, if time permits. Then bring yourself back
slowly, repeating the mantra again for about a minute. Don’t set an alarm, because
this will jar you when it sounds.

Every individual has a different experience during meditation. Some people

report that their body feels heavy. Others report that their bodies feel light. Some
claim to fall asleep once in a while. Whatever happens, enjoy it. You are beginning
to learn how to relax. This is the first step in letting your body and mind heal
themselves.

The fourth part of your daily yoga routine is the physical one: the poses.
Experts say these poses work in many ways. Some stretch and strengthen muscles.
Others improve posture and the skeletal system. Still others compress and relax
organs and nerves.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 57
Together, the poses are powerful weapons against disease. They make your
body more resistant and ready to heal itself.

Always wind down and relax at the end of your sessions. Each session
should end with the corpse pose and five to ten minutes of relaxation exercises.
Nancy Ford-Hohne, founder-director of the Yoga and Health Studies Center in
Alexandria, Virginia, suggests thinking to yourself, “Inhale energy and healing,
exhale fatigue and stress.” You can replace this with whatever is affecting your
well-being at that moment.

To get started, find a comfortable and warm place on a level floor. Wear
loose clothes, and go gently. Do not push your body until it hurts. The famous
saying “no pain, no gain” does not apply in yoga. Yoga’s objective is to make you
feel good.

CHAPTER FOUR:

SUMMARY

In spite of America’s international reputation for medical breakthroughs,

there is a silent revolution of alternative health care occurring in homes all across
the United States. One suspected contribution to this revolution is the complicated
and costly conventional medical procedures. People are finding out, when they
turn to natural healing, that natural healing is simple, traditional, and decidedly
low-tech. However, these natural techniques are proving to prevent illness and
solve everyday health problems.

Whether you have decided to change your diet or relax with meditation, the
natural approach is reported to make in individual feel more in charge of their
health. This is one of the primary goals of natural healing. The concept is to break
the cycle of dependency, to get well and stay out of the doctor’s office, when it’s not
necessary.

Alternative practitioners confess that this approach is not for everyone.

According to Dr. David Edelberg, M.D., a medical director of the American Holistic
Center/Chicago,

“There are plenty of people who think ‘I don’t want to change my life. I don’t
want to hear that my job is giving me a coronary. Just give me a pill for it.’” For
these individuals, it is best to go back to your conventional physicians, who will
probably do just that.

Alternative experts say that changing behaviors is hard. Many people who
endorse alternative methods are attracted to the emphasis on treating the whole
person—mind, body, and spirit.

www.NaturallyStiff.com 59
In today’s world, people are taking control of their destinies. With
alternative techniques and natural remedies, the cost of health care can be
significantly lower.

As a final note, anyone interested in pursuing alternative methods should

acknowledge that this method should be used in conjunction with conventional
medicine. Certain adjustments in our daily routine can substantially improve our
health. For example, quitting smoking is always a great idea.
