Defining India and Indian culture is a an almost impossible task. 29 linguistic
states, more than 4000 languages and dialects, numerous religions, with uncountable communities and sects and probably a million gods and goddesses. In a country like ours having such diverse demographics policing and governance becomes a mammoth task. There’s always a trade off between various communities when it comes to satisfying their wants, which gives rise to communal politics. We all are bound to have multiple identities. Cultural identity, gender, state, country, religion, and the list just doesn’t end. Sometimes in this identity tryst one finds peculiar and unimaginable combinations. For example have u ever heard of a Punjabi Christian, or a Bengali Muslim, but they are there just as we have Christian Keralites. Surprising isn’t it. So what really defines a person u talk to? First comes the face and appearance, then the name, the cultural identity, professional identity and so on. We immediately form opinions and probably generalize our perceptions according to his or her community or religion. Say if I meet a Punjabi I might think o this guy would flaunt a lot, or a gujrati is a born kanjoos or all south indians are kitabee keedas. Yes I agree that some of these perceptions might be true on broad terms, but with intermixing of identities these perceptions have now taken a backseat, giving rise to the cosmo politian culture.
